Don't think that it's a bad shot, Tracy! I think that it really showcases HER and who she is, and that, in itself, is a huge success and makes a good photo.

I think what maybe is throwing people off is the lighting. It kind of has that odd lighting that Jennifer described. If the light source was coming from just one side, and lighting up her face, I think it would be "easier" (and I use that really loosely because I can't think of another way to describe it after my loooong day ) to the eye to look at. I don't know if that makes any sense at all to you, but it does in my head lol!

Tracy, totally agree with Stephanie!! It is an adorable picture and I like the blue in the background too - it makes it really "urban" looking!

On that note, can I just say how weird I feel trying to nitpick everybody's photos when I know mine are so bad?!!

I have so many pictures that I know I need heavy CC on that I'm having trouble deciding what to post!!! Thanks for creating this group, Stephanie.

I put my camera back in manual (from Aperture mode) for the first time in months and I am going to figure this out!

are we allowed to cc even if we aren't in the group?

I'll just go ahead since I have a minute.

    Sadie:

#1....nice edit. Their skin is a bit too saturated for my taste. The background looks great! I like the composition but as you mentioned you could step back a bit to give just a little more room for the subjects to breathe. It will also make cropping more flexible.

#2. I love the color in this one...she's so pretty here. The composition is off. Pull back so you can get her eyes in the upper left third. I have no problem with the head chop....just that the eyes are in the wrong place.

#3. Again, very nice edit....skin color looks better here than in #1. Still could use more room around your subject.

    Steph:

#1. He looks totally cute here. I love the composition of this. This is a touch underexposed. Also, your greens have a lot of red/yellow in them. There'd be a better contrast with his skin if they were greener. The shadows are a bit greyish yellow. His lips could use more rosiness in them...cheeks too.

#2. This just doesn't grab me. It's a cute snap, but since I can't see what he's looking it there is a lack of connection. Also, I don't like the grass in front of his face in this instance.

#3. I don't love this chop....or the background really...it looks uncomfortable with the sticks and coarse looking grass. The light is good, exposure is a bit better. The shadows are far too yellow in this one. Also, the ground is too yellow and too red.

#4...the image in post #32...So cute. I love the light in this one. The color isn't bad...really it mostly needs a boost in saturation.

    Tracy:

As you mentioned, the settings are a bit off. I really don't like the brightness of the background, I find it extremely distracting. My eye is simply pulled away from your subject by the bright background and that is never what you want. Your composition should be causing my eye to go to the subject. It is very uncomfortable to look at this photo because it is a constant battle for my eyes. The brightness of the ground actually causes physical discomfort for me to look at as I strain to ignore it and look at your little girl's face.

I like the blue...but I wish that it were not crossing her where it does...it would be much better if it were crossing here at knee level.

It's a cute moment captured and a great memory for you, but it really can't be considered as more than a snap.

i think it's a very cute pic of your daughter and the blown background doesn't necessarily bother me that much, but to make it a little less distracting i'd try maybe lightening the exposure on her to more closely match the background so it isn't such a stark difference. I tried playing with it in lightroom and it's definitely a difficult edit....if i brighten her, the background is totally lost and the grain becomes very prominent. I'd probably rule it a really cute snapshot just because there isn't really a way to brighten her up without losing other important factors. If you lose the background then she is just sorta floating on a pole lol I know it wasn't a particularly thought out or posed shot but maybe lighting coming from one direction would have been better? Still a very cute pic though and one that you'll love looking back on

Amber, I for one, LOVE that you posted CC! I hope you'll pop in again as you have a chance!

I have been thinking all week about what pictures to share because I need help/CC with so many of my images.

The first two were taken a while back and then the third one was taken this week. All with my 50/1.8 lens.

I need desperate help on color with this one. I will post the SOOC if it will help...

Thanks for jumping in, Amber! Your CC is always so helpful!

I wanted to let you all know that we're getting packed up today and moved out tomorrow. We'll be in between places until they move all our stuff in on Wednesday. I'll do what CC I can when I actually get on my computer, or from my phone. Didn't want you to think I bailed on you

    Candace, these are really good!

#1 - That age is hard to photograph, isn't it? On my computer (uncalibrated), he looks blue. I wish he was standing near a more uniform background, because the bright spots are a bit distracting to me. Were you standing in all shade? I'm thinking that if you would have switched places with him, you would have got more light in his eyes, and had less hot spots in the background.

#2 - Was your SS really only 1/50? It looks pretty clear for such a low SS. This one looks too bright to me (this coming from the brightness queen lol! but it's something I'm also working on). This is SUCH a sweet photo! I love the closeness of the pose, and the two chairs. I like how you connected the chairs with one of the kids, as to not have a gap.

#3 - Now just look at that smirk! Great job on not chopping the bow. Comp looks good to me, and you have some directinal lighting going on, which is great! I think, that for me personally, I would have liked to see her angled slightly more toward the light source (window?) to get a bit more light in her eyes, but it's not a deal breaker. This is really nice!

Steph, I think that fourth photo is much better. Good luck with the move.

Tracey, you captured the moment beautifully. Personally, I find the background a little bit distracting. It is drawing my focus away from your daughter. I wish she was a little brighter, but I do think this is one of the those moments that just need to be captured.

    Candace, cute shots.
#1. He is quite central in the frame and it looks a tad cool to me. The hot spots don't bother me so much as they don't cross him.

#2. This one looks a little bright to me, especially when you look at their faces. They look a little warm, but I'm not sure that that isn't my computer. Even though the composition is pretty central I really like how you have composed this shot.

#3. Very sweet. Great eye contact and clarity. Is her shirt blown slightly or just bright? Overall, I really like this one.

Candace, those are really cute shots!

    1. The background seems a bit distracting to me; I wonder if a tighter crop would help a tad. Not too sure, though. Looks like the horizon isn`t straight, though if you fix that he might look too tilted.

    2. Love this! Great grouping, and really nice exposure... maybe just a shade too bright, that`s all. Love it.

    3. So sweet! Really nice portrait. Nice directional light too. I just would turn her a tiny bit more to the light to get a bit more light in her eyes. It`s so precious!

I will CC later on this evening if I have time. Sorry. We are re-modeling and it's a HUGE mess right now!
