Oh WOW Tracy! I simple LOVE #1 & 2! Those are some amazing shots, with #1 being my fave! You are rocking these!
#3 doesn't do as much for me. I think it's just the green. I feel like the red has so much more appeal. And the green in the corner. I think it would have worked better had the whole bg been red.
I think I am the opposite: the 3rd one is my favorite because of the green in with the red (complementary colors) and with lots more focus there. #1 is just too soft and blended. And believe me I have a ton of pics like that too. Such extreme shallow focus it's hard to make it sharp. #2 stands out a little better, but again too blended for me, not sure how to explain it.
LOL... it does seem to me with macro that people often have pretty different opinions. I love #1 and #2 also, Sadie. But I understand Amy's point. It seems such a matter of preference, though!
#1 - I'm not sure why it is, but my eye wants to focus on the upper left corner of the curve of the leaf, but that's not what was focused on. I like the color on color here, though.
#2 - I like the focus on this one better.
#3 - I'm with Amy in that I like the contrasting colors together on this one. Though, I wish that the red was all the way across the background to make it more uniform.
I'm sorry I'm not more helpful! I'm not very good at landscapes and macro, so I'm not sure what kind of direction to give you.
I have a few unusual subjects for cc this week, I hope that's ok:
1. ss1/160, f/10, iso1600, 100mm
I loved the pastel sky colors here and wanted to capture it.
2. ss1/125, f/2.8, iso3200, 100mm (this was underexposed sooc)
3. ss0.5, f/5, iso1600, 100mm
This one was in near-complete darkness along the side of a road next to the river, so it's not perfect but I loved the way the blue railroad bridge looked slightly glowing in the darkness with the orange streetlamps:
Tracy, of the three I like #2 the best. In #1 the petal is a bit lost to me. In #2 there is more contrast so I feel there is more impact. #3 is probably my least favourite. It is cool that you got just the edge of the leaf in focus, however, the left part of the image with the flat part of the leaf is what draws my eye and this is not the area in focus.
Amy,
#1 is a nice shot. I like how the road is leading us into the image. The division between land and sky is pretty much spot on the middle of your shot though. I would probably like to see a little less sky as, although the colour is pretty, is is quite monotonous.
#2 Your focus is great. Was this run through noiseware? It is still a little grainy, though not much. Compositionally it is spot in the middle of the image. That said, that doesn't worry me in this case.
#3 You have the line of the bridge running through the middle of the image. This sort of thing is more Tracy's area of expertise, however, I believe you should aim for a 2/3 to 1/3 ratio if you can, as opposed to the image being broken in half. The halos around the lights are neat, but otherwise, the image is lacking a little. An interesting angle may have helped with that.
#4 Beautiful. Only criticism is you did cut the image in half again. I sound like a broken record

#1 - Love the color tones in this image! I see what G is saying about it being cut in the middle. I know you wanted the sky in there though.
#2 - This one seems a bit blue or washed out to me. I'd love to see that rich vibrant red that you can get with a strawberry.
#3 - This is my least favorite of the bunch. I feel like it's OOF, but then I look at the metal part of the streetlight near the top, and it looks sharp, so I'm not sure what's going on. Were you using a filter on it? Love the starburst!
#4 - Oh so pretty! Love the colors in this one. Again, I agree with G on it being cut a little too in half.
#1 is nicely composed, I like the line of the road. One thing I'm beginning to learn is that if you stand a little higher in shots like this, you can accentuate the lines and see a bit more of the road as it curves there at the top too... but that only works if you have something to stand on! I can see the bit of the pink in the sky, but it's hard for me to see it well. Not sure if that's my monitor, though.
#2 is great, I like the berry and the detail, and I like the shadow. It would be nice to see the front of the berry a little brighter, though. Not sure where the light source was, but it seems a bit dark on the berry itself.
#3, I pretty much agree with Steph's thoughts on this one, and Shadow's re: the composition.
#4 is beautiful! I love the rays of sun coming through against the dark.
