Cicada

Funny story to go along with this photo...

I was out back with the kids, and I put Jackson (my youngest) in the baby swing. As I was getting him in, Carson (my oldest) said he wanted to swing too, so I told him to hop on the "big boy swing". He's looking at the ground, and says, "What's that mommy??" It was a cicada shell. We're looking at it, and I'm explaining to him what it was, and what happened to the bug, and then took it over to Jackson to look at and touch. All of a sudden, I look up at him and see something huge on his back! I kinda freaked out at first, and flicked it off and on to the ground. Then I realized that it was a cicada! I was really excited to show Carson exactly what came out of the shell. It was really something how we were just talking about it, and it showed up on Jackson's back.

That is just fantastic, Steph! AWESOME detail and comp and colours! The DOF is so great, just love that you have bokeh in the foreground like that!

Thanks! He was actually climbing up the tree, and I took it in landscape, but I didn't think it looked that great like that, so I'm glad you like the comp!

Cool photo--nice wing detail! I've been waiting to hear the buzz of the cicadas so I can get my camera out.

They must be pretty bad around here this year. I just found one in the house a little bit ago, with his shell right next to him.

Nice, and it's a periodical cicada! That's at least two now that I've heard of showing up this year; I wonder if PA will get any. I took a photo of a dogday cicada last summer that I really loved. It was hiding in my small lilac bush. I love their colors.

I know they're harmless, Amy, they are just gross to look at. Ew! Wink But then again, this is coming from the girl who just recently took off screaming because a stink bug flew at her. Wink Now THOSE things are gross!

I had a praying mantis land on me once and I think I about passed out. Wink Me and bugs don't mix! This is why I'll never have photos of bugs: I don't get close enough to take pics! Haha.

Still an awesome shot, though, Steph! Biggrin

Yeah, they look really creepy! I did freak out at first though when I saw a huge bug on him! Of course, I did think at first that it was the big carpenter bee that's been flying around the swing set.

The bugs must be pretty bad this year. Bees, cicadas, mosquito's, ants... All things that have been pretty bad around our house so far this spring. Jackson and I are getting eaten alive by the mosquito's. Looks like I need to get out the CB bug spray!

LOL Jen! I agree about the stink bugs--they've been in my house for 2 years and I HATE 'EM! LOL

Stephanie, yeah at first this spring we were having so much rain for a month that there were almost no bugs; and then last weekend we started having dry sunny weather and the bugs were EVERYWHERE last weekend! they've calmed down now but I cannot WAIT for my wildflower garden to bloom so that all the butterflies & other pollinators come fill it! I can't wait for yours to bloom either, so I can see 'em Wink We don't have any flowers in the yard, so we don't see too many butterflies. Maybe I should plant some...

Okay, I LOVE this pic.
And I also love that there are some serious bug lovers on this board! I too would probably freak out if this thing landed on me or any of my kids, but I would of course go grab my camera and shoot away afterward! Biggrin

Great job!
