color check - new calibration RE-EDITS post #8

I recently replaced my Spyder Pro 2 calibration with the x-rite Eye-One system and need some confirmation.

There is a HUGE difference between the two calibrations...which in itself stymies me. Shouldn't both calibrations and profiles be fairly similar?

Anyway...since they are so different, now I'm wondering. Is this calibration any good, or was it the old calibration that was a dud? UGH! Color management is such a beast.

Here are some images from my most recent headshot session. Color check please!

1. This image looks very warm to me...but nicely balanced...meaning not too much red, yellow or magenta. What do you (calibrated people) see?

2. This one looks fairly balanced to me. A little more yellow than the first.

3. This one he looks maybe a touch too dark, and he's more on the orange side.

4. This one, I see his color as just about perfect...though the greens are a touch on the yellow side.

5. And here is an edit comparison. I know the difference isn't huge...but I see a definite difference. For me the eye one version looks perfect while the spyder one looks too cool with not enough contrast. The couch behind her is supposed to be a very dark green and her outfit is a soft white. Which one looks better to you?

I agree with everything you said about the first four pictures. I don't think I can add more to that actually. Smile Hmmm the last one... I definitely see a difference. The one on the left, the eye one, looks warmer and the one on the right not so warm. I think I like the eye one because you said the couch behind her is suppose to be a dark green, well I can see that it is dark green in the eye one than the other. It just looks black in the spyder picture.

what you said.....

They do all look quite warm. I just re-calibrated with the exact same software, and things are looking slightly different to me. I just adjusted and hoped it was ok...

The last pic looks more yellow in the newer edit vs pinker in the sypder edit. I would say they are both fine, looking at them alone... now I don't know, after looking at them side by side.

Your color always looked spot on to me before, I bet it will still look good! I'm not that experienced with recognizing color issues though.

Well, the colors all look richer to me, if that makes sense. But they're all on the warm side, warmer than they should be to me. I'm due for calibration, so I will revisit this thread after I'm done that.

As far as the side by side comparison, I think that I'd like something in between. Yes, the spyder version is cooler, but I'm seeing some green in the eye one version. Actually, when I just scrolled up to look, I'm not sure it's actually green that I see, but it just seems off from what it should be. I wish I could explain better what I'm seeing with my eyes.

I am not calibrated but I agree that for me, they first 4 images are all quite warm. I like warmer images but these are perhaps just a smidge too warm.

As for the side by side, I agree that the spider version couch looks black where I can see it is drak green on the eye one, but I think she looks a smidge too yellow now. Like Gwen, maybe somewhere in the middle.

Crud...I was worried about that. They really don't look too warm to me at all. Maybe I should send the eye one back. UGH!

I calibrated this afternoon, and my earlier feedback still stands ...

of course, I'm using Spyder ...

Another issue...they look way more yellow on firefox than they do in Photoshop.

I'm dying...seriously. I thought I was done with this garbage. It's amazing...they are all much pinker in Photoshop CS5 and I don't know why. They should be the same.

New edits. They all look better to me. Still too yellow?

they definitely look a lot better Smile i really hate calibrating for this exact reason! plus I use google chrome now and I have to remind myself to check with different browsers because they all look just a smidge different in each one. Google chrome makes everything just a smidge yellow...but it's barely noticable.

they look better to me too. I hate that you're dealing with this, I know the pain. I'm using Chrome if that makes a difference. (I had to stop using Firefox as it was slowing my computer down in a huge way)

I think they are looking better... more pinky. It looks a bit more natural.

Your second batch is definitely better.
