Creepy contacts on Flickr?

I was just added as a contact on Flickr by this guy in Indonesia. I just blocked him because I wasn't comfortable with that at all! The only picture in his photostream is one of himself, and it just creeped me out. Oh, and he marked me as "family" in his contacts.

Has this happened to you at all? I've had strangers add me, but turns out they're mostly people from clickin' moms that just like my stuff. This guy is out of nowhere. Almost all of my photos are set to family/friends - but my portfolio set is open (since I'm trying to set up barters with my photography and need my portfolio easily accessible). My nature photography is also open because I'm not worried about it.

I haven't really gotten onto Flickr yet, but I've had several strange friend requests on FB. Usually, they're from people purporting to be 20-something-year-old women (maybe some scammer be phishing for guys???).

I think you did the right thing. If you feel in your gut that something is not right, it's best to delete such requests.

Yeah, definitely block him. Weird.
On another note, is clickin moms worth it? I thought about joining at one time, but never got around to it.

yes and no. there are some great shares there, plus discounts from vendors. there are classes, but I haven't done any of them. there's quite a mixture of women on there (Damon from ILP is there, he's the only guy I've seen so far - and he's been helpful on the threads he's replied to me on). but I feel like there are a LOT of newbies on there and so many times I don't get the answers I need when I'm asking there. but it's smaller than ILP and there IS a nice mix of professionals there too. if I didn't get in when there was a discount, I'd be unhappy with the money spent. but I signed when there was a deal ($15/6 months) so I can't complain. if I spent more time there, I think it would really be worth it. but I can't seem to find the time to put into it.

Definitely creepy. I haven't had that happen (yet) at Flickr even with most of my content being public (I only make it that way so I can post pics at this forum---I don't think they'd show up here if I kept them as "only contacts & friends/family" right?

Anyway, the only place I've gotten stranger "add-me"s is on FB, even though 99.9% of my stuff is private to friends only.

i don't get creepy invites either...but even if i did i'd totally ignore them Smile i ignore the ones I get on FB too. Sorry buddy if I don't know who you are or we don't have any mutual friends then forget it! lol and yes mine are mostly set to friends and family and I'm still able to share them here. Smile I might join clickin moms later on down the road. I really want to get more serious about my photography but I just don't have anyone to practice on besides my own two kids! So it's hard to get serious about it right now.

Good to know! So could I set my account to F&F but still post pictures on my blog using the code?

Block him for sure. Our local photographer/friend just cancelled her account due to too many creeps. So sad, seems to be happening more and more on flickr.

yes

so the creepy guy ... he can't see anything of mine that's F&F if he adds me, I have to add him for him to see. he can see the public stuff, which makes me wonder if I should host my portfolio differently. But when I have it set to F&F, I can't share the slideshow, even as a guest pass. Sad

why don't you make a website or something just to show off your portfolio? then you can take it off flickr. Smile i hate setting pics of my kids and people on public on flickr. I usually just make my miniatures pictures public and stuff that doesnt matter too much to me, it's watermarked anyway.

I'm not ready to pay for a website yet ... with the free ones, you get what you pay for.

And I like the slideshow option. Here's what I'm using right now to share it - http://www.flickr.com/photos/coolmama72/sets/72157623852300535/show/

suggest away, I might be surprised! it's just that ones I've used in the past that were free were crazy with the ads, and I wanted it to feel more professional so to speak.

I get freaky people all the time and they either from indonesia or india. At least all they see are the ones I dont have set to private.

As for free website try www.webs.com its free and easy to use. At least you can put your portfolio up.

Gwen, I changed all my Flickr pics to "me/friends/family" last night and now none of my linked pics are visible on this board Sad at least to me; can you all see them?

can't see them but I think if you go back and copy and paste the link again it should work Smile

I really like the look of wix.com websites. they look *almost* professional because of the flash. But that's just me. Smile don't know about the ads though.

I like Wix too---mine is free and has NO ads other than just the little Wix one at the bottom. But it's not animated or anything so it's totally unobtrusive.

Thanks, I will try re-copying the image links for my newest threads--but my older threads will still be messed up Sad I assume I don't need to "add a guest pass" for each pic, right?

The URLs change when you change privacy settings. You'll just need to edit the threads you still want feedback on with the new picture URLs. Yeah, it's a pain, but at least your images aren't public now. Worth the peace of mind, IMO.

I'll have to check out wix.com, thanks!

Thanks Gwen! I'm gonna change the links now. Let us know if you try a Wix site--I like everyone's sites that I've seen so far, and I've really enjoyed making mine.

EDIT: ok I used the new links under the "share this" menu at Flickr for my newest thread and now I am seeing all red Xs! >Sad I used to always use the "HTML" link rather than the URL link....but there is no HTML link now that I've changed the privacy settings.

What do I do now? Why aren't mine visible and everyone else's are?

there should be a html one there. I usually use the url link and click on the little picture (insert image) option above...the one right next to the earth with a paperclip (ok thats what it looks like to me lol) paste url link and there's your pic. Smile easy!

I click on "all sizes" and then the html links for the different sizes are under the pictures. that's how I do it.

Thanks everyone, the "all sizes" page links worked. I put back my 2 most recent threads' pics. I guess if I have time I will go do all my other threads too lol, what a pain, but like you said Gwen, it's worth it! I was reading threads at Flickr about privacy and some of the threads were downright scary!
