    Default DOF calculator?

Does anyone know how to use this DOF calculator? And care to translate it in simple english for me? I have an idea of what it means but the little illustration below, the total depth of field area, that's where it's going to be the sharpest right? Anything before it or after that will be soft/out of focus. Is that right? I've been trying to figure out how to get sharp images at f2.8 on my 28-75mm lens. I took some of a teddy bear and so many were soft or out of focus. And I can't guess distances between me and subjects. I've always been bad at that. Do any of you actually do that? This is all so confusing but I want to learn more about it.

Ok well no worries if no one can help I'll get it on my own or just google it and see what I come up with. Hope I'm not worrying too much though. My 50mm 1.8 lens is a lot sharper than my Tamron lens. My only zoom lens and I'm scared if I buy another zoom lens in the future it will be the same thing. Oh well!
