Default Dumb question: Catchlights and backlighting

I found a couple of potentially good locations for doing some golden hour shoots with my kids (still trying to get the 'perfect' picture for a canvas gift for our parents), but both of them would be backlit... which isn't a problem, because I love backlit photos. But I started to wonder, is it hard to get good light in the eyes when your subject is backlit? I don't have a reflector, so I'm thinking maybe I shouldn't go this route if there's going to be an issue.

I know I could just take them out there and try, but one of the locations in particular has no other alternative but backlit shots, so I'd kind of like to know if I'm wasting my time before I dress them up and take them down there.

Is it deep shade? If so, it will probably be hard to get light in their eyes naturally. If not, put them at the edge of the shade (if there is shade) and shoot slightly down on them. If its wide open, then you shouldn't have a huge problem, but you will probably get a lot of haze.

I have taken many backlit photos with nice light in they eyes, so it can be done.

No, not deep shade. At least, not one of the spots. The other is sort of "medium" shade. OK, I'll probably try. Either tonight or when DH can give me a hand in a few days.

Yes, as Stephanie said...just shoot down on them a bit and you'll be fine.
