family photos for c&c

Hi guys ....

well ... I finally convinced the guys it was time for this year's family photo shoot. But the photog (friend) who normally does the job for us was not available and we're kinda under a time crunch, so I dragged out the tripod and tried my hand with the timer. Among other lessons I learned this year are ... (1) I really need a remote shutter release and (2) it is SO worth it to have our friend take these photos each year! Blum 3

Despite those lessons ...

it went ... OK. A front was trying to blow in, so we had clouds then sun. It was fairly hot (for this time of year - mid 80s at 9am) and ridiculously humid. *sigh* I *should* have taken that into consideration - I was running back and forth, back and forth and worked up quite a sweat. I should have chosen a different venue, but .... hind sight, 20/20, and all that jazz.

DH's glasses are always an issue. they're transition lenses and they darken the moment he steps outside. Bouncing light on them only makes it worse. The wind was whipping my hair all around. And Loli is 8 (need I say more?). Blum 3

But despite all that ... I'd still love a little feed back if you don't mind.

all pics taken w/ my nifty 50mm at 100 iso

1. f/4 ss=1/800

2. f/4 ss=1/800

3. f/4 ss=1/200

4. f/4 ss=1/200

5. f/3.2 ss=1/160

6. f/4.5 ss=1/80

that last one is my favorite of the day.

and here's a bonus ... this is what the Christmas card will look like this year ...

wasn't my favorite of the options I gave the boys, but this is the one they voted for, so ... Smile

We did family pics this weekend too. Biggrin

1) I like, but looks a bit dark to me.
2) I like #3 better, b/c it's brighter, but I like Loli's expression better in 2.
#4 & 6 are my favs though!

Great pics. Enjoyed seeing YOU too!

Love the last one!

And, my dear, as a photographer's husband, your DH needs to get a different pair of glasses - at least for picture day LOL. I refuse to do pictures of anyone in transition glasses. No way no how. They're impossible.

I really need to get going on my family pictures too ... I was going to try the timer/tripod thing but after reading about some of your struggles, I might see if a friend can do it instead. Smile

1. I feel like this one needs to be brightened up some. but I love Loli's little smile. Smile

2. Not a fan of this one ... Carlos looks annoyed and you don't look comfortable. Carlos' face also seems darker than it should

3. My favorite of the bunch, this is nice! I think slowing the SS helped you here for sure.

4. I like Loli here ... but I don't think it's a flattering picture of you (hope you're okay with my honesty - I'd want you to tell me!)

5. This one is very sweet, I love you and Loli here. But I wish Carlos was more interactive, like had his arm around you for this. I know you're using the timer, so the time was limited. I don't like being able to see stuff from under the stairs though - tough location.

6. I get the look you're going for, and I dig the red brick. But you need to be turned or something. I can't seem to explain it right, I just feel like your body angle doesn't mesh with the look of the photo. I know it's your favorite of the day, so I feel bad saying it. I'm giving you my personal thoughts though, what really matters is what you like. Actually, I know what would have made it better, your foot facing the same way as Carlos' foot. So just the one leg turned.

Nice card! Rich saw it and really liked it. Smile The second photo from the left you don't have in this post, but I really like it!

I really like the last one! Love the color and the light.
However, the one thing I would change is your pose. Not sure, but it seems you may be too "squished" into your husband. I think I'd like to see a little more space between the top of your head and his chin.

Thanks for all the feedback guys! Gwen ... I didn't take umbridge with ANYTHING you posted - I asked for c&c and you gave it, THANKS!!!

I do much better when I am behind the camera than in front of it. And I rushed the whole thing b/c of the weather conditions and the boys not really being "into" it. I'm getting to where I much prefer to shoot "others" as they WANT the photos done and are willing to work a bit to get it. Blum 3

Again, thanks everyone. I should get my card prints back today and I just can't wait to see them.

Best,

I am late on this. But just wanted to say that these are lovely family photos. I agree with you, I do so much better behind the camera too. I find myself making faces when they take pictures of me... hahaha.

Where are you ordering your cards from?

Wow, way to go on doing a shoot with a timer! You are a brave woman! Not to mention with 2 guys who are less than enthusiastic about it! I am attempting a family shot of the 3 of us sometime in the next week with my remote. I'm nervous! I know I am late on this one, but wanted to say I like #3 the best. I also like the look of #6. And your card is great! I'm also curious where you are printing them!
