Family session gone wrong! PIC HEAVY!

This was my first time shooting a small family. I did one large family (15 people or something) but that was totally different. So it was a bit of a disaster. I couldn't figure out why my camera was making me wait in between shots... then I realized 50 shots in, that my on board flash had popped up! AHHH I just about died! By the time I noticed, the light was almost gone. (the location they chose was a shady pit!) So... not enough light to get all three of them in focus. I'm dying for a full frame, I think I have outgrown my camera, at least for outdoor shooting, especially in low light... anyways... I got some cute ones of their LO, and I hope they won't notice that they are a bit oof in the family shots Blum 3 Oh well, I'm just glad I'm not charging yet! CC is very welcome, although I am aware that some are a bit soft Smile

Here is one where the on board flash fired. I tried to fix it up a little, but meh.

This one was very blown on her arm and forehead, but I tried to recover, and paint some skin back in. I can totally see it, but I think she might still like it?

i think they look fine! you are being too hard on yourself! Smile I can't even tell if they are soft or not. even the first one where the flash popped up, that one looks just fine. I am sure they will love them! If you hadn't said anything about painting her skin back in I would not have been able to tell. Smile I'm sure she won't notice though. What camera do you have? My flash doesn't usually pop up if I'm in manual mode. Only does in auto. Smile But I have a canon 40d.

I have the xsi, I think it was my fault. We were at the pumpkin patch, and we asked a family to take out pic, so i switched it to auto, I think it must have been on auto when I switched it on, and I didn't notice the flash popping up! I blame it on preggo brain!

hehehe Smile It happens! But I think you did a great job! That location looks really nice for a photo shoot! I wish I could still wear sandals outside. It's freezing cold here and just snowed a wee bit tonight Lol

wow, snowing already!? It has been great here, but we are about to start the 9ish months of rain, which is really gonna suck! I love the snow, but I think its because I don't get to see it often Smile

I definately think you're being too hard on yourself. These are awesome. I don't see any softness on the family photos. MAYBE Dad is a hair in 5 and 6, but not enough to be noticable unless you're really looking.

I love the faded look you have going on with the processing. Care to share your workflow?

I think these look great! Can't tell the flash fired from here. And that little guy is so adorable!

Thanks, I did pull some magenta out of most of these, I guess on those ones I didn't take it quite far enough. Smile

Ugh, I just wrote a bunch to you and then my browser went back!

I don't think you can do horribly Lauren, these are great. I might up the exposure of the little guy in #10 just to make it more consistent with the others. #2 is awesome.

Sure. Heres what I did

Open in ACR - black slider to 7 or so, adjust exposure if necessary, -10ish on the clarity slider, if I'm using a high iso (400 or higher) +5 on the vibrance slider. I set a custom white balance in there, but they were still looking magenta, so I slid it towards green a bit then open in photoshop.

Curves layer, S-curve, blending mode set to luminosity. Lower opacity to about 20%

Some of these I added red and yellow in a color balance layer, and masked people back in to bring out the fall colors.

High pass filter, set to soft light, then add layer mask, invert mask, and paint over the eyes. Lower opacity to taste.

#7 I did a radial blur, and masked back the people.

Some of them I ran lb honey, tossed the brighten layer, and lowered the pop a lot, then lowered the honey layer to around 20/30%

hmmm, then I think I just burned the edges with a big soft brush, ran my border/resize action, and wm. Biggrin

Thanks Kristen! I think I went a little burn crazy on the grass on #10 Smile Your right, it does look darker compared to the rest. One day I will get consistency down!

Really, you can't tell!? I painted over the pin lights! and dodged the iris where I thought a catchlight should be... lol. Only in the first pic though. The rest were WAY over exposed

I totally agree, you are being WAY too hard on yourself! These are amazing. I LOVE the family ones and I think the ones of the little guy are adorable! No cc from me. I too love your processing.

Everyone is right ... you are being WAY too hard on yourself. If you hadn't mentioned it, I would NEVER have guessed your flash fired! I feel you on the consistency but you have a LOT of great looks here. I think this family is lucky to have you working with them!

I can't see #2 but I think this is a great set. A little on the "dark side" for me but I really like the overall processing. My faves are #1 and #4.
