First Headshots

My brother and I had our photography date today. It started with each of us taking our own pictures. It ended with him as the model and me taking all the pictures. I think he would be a great model. He follows direction very well and he seems very at ease in front of the camera. Here are a few and they are quick edits in photoshop.

Would really like CC on the colors. They all look different with skin tones and such. I just can't keep consistancy even though they were all exposed very similar (all exposed pretty well).

#2
1/80 f/3.2 100

#4
1/250 f/1.8 100 (may be too soft?)

wow these are great! Smile and your brother is a cutie Wink well lets see... #1 I see a bit too much yellow and a little bit of magenta in there. #2 looks just about right. maybe a smidge too cool but i'm not too sure. #3 i see magenta on the right side of his face and neck and ears, and just a bit of yellow too. #4 skin tone looks just about right actually. doesn't look too soft to me. Smile #5 i feel like this one is a bit darker than the rest. maybe some brightening? skin tone looks ok to me. #6 hahaha looks like he's saying "are you done yet?" maybe needs a bit of brightening and i see a bit of magenta in certain spots but its those spots that are usually more red/magenta than other spots. Smile

i can't wait to practice on my brother! he loves his picture taken. It's so nice to take pictures of someone who doesn't move every second. lol isn't it? i wish i could do it more often.

Beautiful photos Jen!! What type of camera is it that you use? I'm thinking I may have to wait to buy a camera and lens that I really like then just settle for what I can afford now.

Thanks so much Loida! I see the yellow in 1 and 3. Now I've just got to figure out how to change all of those things Wink Or I guess I could just try to redo the SOOC.

Sarah, I've got the Canon T1i and I used the 50mm 1.8 for all of these pictures. You can get the Canon XS refurb kit with a new 50mm 1.8 for just under $500 from Adorama. That's basicly the same camera (just newer) that I learned on.

I found a Rebel Xs kit used on adorama.com for $350 said to be in excellent condition. Would this be a good buy? I would probably have to save for the 50mm lens since we have so many expenses the next couple of months:confused: I would probably still have to beg for my hubby to spend for the camera but since it is my birthday Monday and then Mother's day...;)

Sorry I'm taking over your thread!

No problem at all! I've never bought used from Adorama, but I don't think I'd have any hesitation. They're a great site and I would trust their judgement. It does show that it has the Canon 1 year limited warranty. But, I'd probably wait until I had the extra 40 or 50 dollars to get the refurb. You'd get a 1 year Adorama warranty plus a 90 day Canon warranty. That means they will replace the product should anything go wrong within the first year.

saw these on FB. Wink awesome catchlights in these! I like the comp/expression best of the first but I think your SS was a bit on the slow side. if you had increased your ISO, you could have gone with a faster SS and also let in more light. of course, the yellow might be throwing me off, as I'm seeing a lot here. the second one is definitely exposed better than the first. the third has too much magenta going on.

wish you had numbered these, losing track in my replies here. Lol

exposure looks great in 4, but the last two seem to need a little more light.

great job!

Thanks Gwen! (I've numbered them for future replies, always for get that. Sorry!)

I'm telling you, I always forget about ISO. It was pretty bright outside so I figured staying at 100 would be sufficiant. I'll have to keep that in mind next time.

I'll also try to work on better color consistancy when processing. I just have a hard time keeping things looking the same.

Alright, I suppose as the resident headshot gal I should give my worthless 2 cents.

1. This would be great if it were in portrait, as is, there is not enough room for his chin to breathe.

2. His eyes need to be higher in the frame....go ahead and chop more off the top of his head. I don't love the light here...it's a touch flat, and cool.

3. Won't work as a headshot. He's not looking at the camera...and he's not really giving any emotion or anything. Light is nice here though, however the white balance is off...too magenta in the shadows I think.

4. This is a cute shot...not really a headshot, but a nice fun portrait.

5. This is 100% my least favorite of the bunch. I'm getting no connection here, the background is distracting and not attractive enough on its own to warant distraction. There is a strange line above his head that just completely pulls focus. The lighting is spotted and there is a huge bright spot on his cheek. Color is off too...cyan and underexposed.

6. I like his expression here...a cute shot. Composition is lacking, the dead space to the right does nothing to enhance the photo. This is another one that would work better in Portrait orientation. Photo is a touch underexposed. Those eyes would look great with a bit of pping to them.

Thanks so much, Amber for your feedback!

I probably should have called the thread something else...while my brother is thinking about going into modeling, I don't think he'd acutally use any of these photos in a portfolio. It was mainly just giving me practice with a human that doesn't move around every half a second Biggrin

I have more to work with on #1, I'll try a portrait version

I think you are doing great. I see improvements with every post!

1. I think his face was brighter in the original one. I would like to see an in between. I do love the shot though!
2. my fav!
3. I feel like you are looking up at him. I like the colors and the expression though! Eyes look awesome here!
4. his face is a bit bright, but I like it!
5. not sure on this one....
6. I LOVE your new edit on it!
