Here are a few pictures I took this weekend of my good friend and neighbor's 7 day old... I was also her doula and did birth photography for her. He has really bad baby acne right now, all over.. so I did all i knew to do to try to soften that and tone it down a little.. he was not cooperating very well, so we only played for about 20 min.
Here is straight out of camera.. you can see all his blemishes...
there is a line on his face that is too light that i need to fix..other than that.. what do you thinK?
here is straight out of the camera -
taken with rebel xti
bounced speedlight off of ceiling, there wasn't enough light through the windows or i had harsh shadows
using cs4 - still learning that!!
i haven't cc'd on many pics before but i'll give it a try. first off he's a cutie. the conversion for the 1st pic feels really harsh on my eyes...like it needs a bit more contrast or something...? The other hat picture in B&W looks better to me (on monitor at work). i like how you softened up the baby acne in the last pic
(hope i did ok in cc'ing )
oh, poor little peanut with the baby acne! I heard that breastmilk does wonders to help clear that up. anyhow, I can tell that it was hard to work with.
here are my initial thoughts
1 - the limb chop (feet) bothers me here, as well as the lack of eye contact. I'd rather either see his eyes or have his eyes closed. the conversion definitely needs more pop - I know you were trying to hide the baby acne but he's too washed out.
2. sweet newborn grin, but to me this strikes me more as a snapshot than a portrait type
3. I like how you softened the last one at the end, but he looks so awkward lying there like that. good job bouncing the speedlight though, nice catchlights!

that's some seriously cool editing! PP is my weakest link, I think.
I love seeing the original as well as the edited version.
My favorite of this set is the 3rd group. the angle is a little unusual, but I think a tighter crop would really help w/ that. ... maybe crop just below his left elbow (camera right). I think that would draw more attention to his adorable face.
You're off to a wonderful start here and I can't wait to see what you post next.
Newborns are really tough regardless, and that looks some really hard skin to work with! The patch tool would do wonders to help smooth his skin out some--have you used that feature?
#1--your focus and exposure are really good. I also LOVE the high key conversion, very nice! The comp is a bit off like Gwen said, with the chopped foot and the awkward position of the babe, but nice job overall.
The third is definitely the strongest of the bunch. You have that sweet NB eye contact, with nice focus, and the comp is better, though I do think you could crop a little tighter. Again, lovely conversion!
Keep on sharing!
You did a good job editing away the babe's marks. That hat is adorable!!
On an o/t note, is the mamma breastfeeding??? I thought my lil guy had babe acne too, but turns out he was reacting to my consuming of eggs. His marks started out looking exactly like this lil guys and the more I ate eggs, the worse it got.
OH.. thank you, thank you, thank you for the cc! I really like the high key conversion look too, but i was starting to second guess myself when others were saying it was too much.. photography is a LOT about knowing the "rules" (which I am STILL learning!) but a LOT about personal style and opinions (which I totally get and love about it).. so it's hard when I post something on one board and try to fix it like suggested and re post it somewhere else and then someone else is cc'ing what I did to "fix" it and likes the original way I did it better... whoa is that confusing as a newbie...lol
Ok.. back to the photos... I am about to lay my little one down for a nap and I'm gonna work on the things you guys suggested.. the only thing is the stupid foot chop.. that is IN camera so I Can't bring the other foot back..lol.. that little guy was NOT in the mood for pictures and he may look like he was still and peacful in the few I got, but those were just "in between" moving around.. I basically just stood there, camera ready and just kept shooting as he moved in hopes I'd get a pic without a grimace or hand in the face.. so this one was ALMOST there except for the stupid foot chop! I will play with the cropping and see what I can get. As far as the angle and the way he's laying.. I TRIED to reposition the little dude, he was NOT having it! The more I messed with him, the fussier he got.. so I just let him be and tried to work with what I got..lol.. I will try another crop with the last one and repost what I come up with! I really wanted a sweet on the belly shot, but he did NOT like being on his belly! Like I said, she is a good friend and right across the street.. so since he was fussy... I didn't stay long. It was dinner time for all of us, I just walked over there to play for a few minutes and this is what I got.
I'll repost the what I come up with soon!
I like the re-crop of the hat pic a lot better. I think his tummy looked really bloated or something in the original.
