Focus on the wrong thing?

I shot this in manual with AF on, I do this most of the time. I like the comp but what I don't like is the focus fell on the rock, I am wondering how I could correct this next time I shoot?

I'm confused. It looks to me like the dog and the rock are on the same focal plane. Did you want the rock OOF?

Yeah putting the rock OOF would be nice, I find it a distraction.

If you want something oof you need to place it either in front of or behind the focal point. The dog and the rock are the same distance away from you so they both fall in the focal point. The only way to solve the problem in this instance is to either move yourself to the right so the dog is in front of the rock or move the dog.

Thanks, I'll try both methods next time if the dog co-operates as well as she did yesterday.
