    Default a gentle reminder

to come out from behind the camera from time to time:

So you’re feeling too fat to be photographed . . . – My Friend Teresa Photography

This article has been floating around facebook, twitter, etc but I wanted to share it here too. It's a good reminder for us all to get out from behind the camera from time to time.

So ... let's see about some new self portraits, family shots, mommy & me sessions, what ever it takes. Just don't put this off.

    Best,
    GiGi

This got to me. I hardly ever come out from behind the camera. I am a good 30 - 40 lbs overweight and have been feeling particularly "unworthy" of photos for quite a while now.

But this weekend, since DH was sick and Loli and I needed to give him some recovery time at home alone, we went out with the specific purpose of taking some pictures together.

Logan has expressed an interest in photography and at 11 years of age is ready to move off of auto mode. He's been using shutter priority mode at our soccer games for a while now. But this time he was preparing to go manual for the first time (can you say "proud momma?!).

So Sunday afternoon, we went to a location I've been meaning to scout for future use and I handed him the camera. We talked about settings and the exposure meeter. And then I stepped out from behind the lens and let him take some pics.

I'll be honest, it didn't feel good to edit those pictures as I could see every single thing I despise about my looks.

But then Loli came to the computer room with me. And he told me what he loved about each shot and what he was trying to achieve.

Just like the original article says, he doesn't see what I see. He thinks I'm lovely. I didn't have to beat or cajole a compliment out of him. He loves me and loves what he sees when he looks at me. So I will cherish these photos more than you can ever imagine. The belly rolls, the straining buttons, the grey hair, the double chin ... none of it matters. NONE OF IT.

Here is my favorite shot of the day that he took. It's OOF, I know, but I love what he was trying to achieve. We will be going back to this spot and he'll get a chance to work on the technical aspects of the shot. But I still love it.

Logan says this is his favorite (and this one is in focus):

I'll be printing both of these for the family scrapbook.

I have some others I'll share on another thread of the 2 of us together, but I wanted to put these here.

    TFL!

These are wonderful, GiGi, and I love the reminder you gave us. My weight has been increasing due to medications and things, and my skin is covered in brown spots also due to medication; but DH always tells me how beautiful I am and doesn't even see the 'ugliness'. Our loved ones LOVE us for who we are, and we should not be scared to record ourselves as they see us in photographs. My mom never lets anyone take her picture because of her weight and I keep telling her that one day when she's gone, we are going to be so sad that we don't have pictures of her with her grandkids or with us to remember her by. She doesn't understand that we love her, and want those memories of her, to cherish now and in the future.

Anyway, it's a great reminder, and I just love the beautiful photos that Logan took of you. They are truly beautiful photos to treasure -- of a truly beautiful person!

    Those are great GiGi!

One of my resolutions this year was to get in front of the camera more! Here's one I took a few weeks ago with the timer on....not sure if I shared this here yet?

How beautiful, both of your posts! I totally agree. I have always been the type of person to worry about every single little imperfection about myself, even when my loved ones always tell me they love how I look etc. I almost always hate my own pics and it takes me forever to take one I like or choose one I like that others take. BUT I am getting better about it especially now that I have a daughter and I love spending time with her and photographing her...and photographing us together. Gigi I love that first photo, it's beautiful.

Katie you posted right when I did lol and WOW that photo is GORGEOUS!!!!! What were your settings? *nevermind I found them on Flickr

Thank you! I used my 18-135 lens because space was tight. Settings- 1/160, f 4.0, iso 2000.

Just BEAUTIFUL, Katie! And the conversion is amazing as always!

It's great to see you with your boys - they both resemble you quite a bit (though in slightly different ways). So adorable!

I do agree we are definitely overly critical of ourselves, though I don't like being in front of the camera I do know I have to do it more. I think you ladies are beautiful and brave thanks for sharing pictures of yourself.
