Paris France and London England!! And a small day trip to Copenhagen Denmark. =) And some local places. My husband and I have been to London and Copenhagen a few years ago. Back then I wasn't that much into photography. Actually, not at all. I just had a little P&S and it was a really horrible one!! All my pictures have dates on them and I hate that! BUT I'm glad I have pictures at all ya know? BUT this summer we are going to Paris and London (again!!) and I'm so so sooo excited! Because now I actually know what I'm doing...somewhat..ya know?? But I have a question... Would you shoot in raw or just jpeg? And would you shoot in auto mode (can't shoot in RAW in auto) or maybe both? or some other mode? I will be bringing my laptop with me to upload the pictures =) anyone have any tips? I don't think I trust myself to do nothing but manual. Maybe P mode? I should probably practice a bit more. I have also not had any luck using AV mode or the other one. Pictures just turn out weird. And should I take my speedlight with me ya think? I don't know what good it will do me though. Maybe some night shots? I plan on using my P&S as well. It's such a good little camera. I have to replace it soon though but I'm thinking something similar to it. The video mode on it is great! Anyway....if any of you all have any tips I would love to hear or rather read all of them! Thanks!!! Can you tell I'm excited!!! wooo! I've always wanted to go to Paris! I can't wait to share all my pictures with you all. I'm not really going to worry about getting perfect shots (ya know composition wise,etc...i just want good exposure).. I will just be taking pictures. I don't want to think too much about the photography side of it all. I want to enjoy my vacation
Oh and I plan on using my Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 lens (it hardly comes off my camera now). I don't really think I'm going to bother bringing the others. I'm not sure though. I might bring my 30mm 1.4 lens for possible indoor shots. What do you think?
How exciting! I spent a year in Brittany and have been in Paris several times. We spent New Year's in Versailles in 2007/8.
I'm pretty new and don't have any real advice about camera mode. I can tell you that if you plan on using Metro a lot in Paris, you'll do a lot of walking. Their subway system is a bit like New York City's in that it is old and there are more stairs than elevators. It can be tiring to lug around a lot of bags, so it's good to plan on taking what you need when you leave the hotel. (We had to do a lot of stroller lifting because my son was not yet two when we went.)
I would recommend taking the speedlight. You never know when you'll be inspired to shoot in some dark little corner cafe! In fact, I think it would be hard to run out of inspiration in Paris!
If you'd like to photograph your kids or other kids, I highly recommend Luxembourg Gardens, on the Left Bank. They have a little pond where children can rent toy sailboats, and there's a playground. There's also lots of nice little fountains and gazebos.
BTW, are you all seeing the effects of the Iceland volcano in Norway? It looks like travel is nearly impossible now.
Hope you have a great time!

thanks! we are actually planning on taking two strollers. But i'm not too sure yet though because my daughter is going to be 4 in June and my son 2 in June (umbrella strollers of course...not big ones). I know he'll get tired of walking but as for my daughter. Not too sure yet. I went for a walk just around the neighborhood the other day for about 1 hour and she said she started getting tired. It will be me, my husband, my brother and my mom and dad so we have plenty of people to carry bags or purses or whatever. we are still working on the details. DH bought a travel bed for my son since he still sleeps in the crib and we don't want to have a hard time with the hotel and cribs and what not. It will be interesting to vacation with 2 little ones now. I think we will have to go to that garden. I was looking up a lot of stuff a few days ago and that one kept coming up. I think they'd have fun if we took them to fun places too. I'm not sure what we'll be doing about transportation. I know we will be walking lots though. We will be so tired but we are only there for 2 days so I don't care lol I will be taking my backpack with me. Forgot what its called...lowepro I think? It has a nice compartment on the top for extra stuff like wallets and diapers even and of course on the bottom a place for my camera and lenses and speedlight. Then DH will be carrying another backpack (which ever one is the heaviest lol) and that will have stuff for the kids. We'll have plenty of hands that's for sure so I think I'll take the speedlight just in case. thanks for the tips!!
Ohh, how exciting for you! When I go on holiday I shoot a mix of RAW & Jpeg. If I know it is something I am likely to want to work on and tweak, then I shoot RAW, like cathedrals etc, but if it is just snaps of my kids or in busy public places (like Trafalgar square for example), I would probably shoot jpeg. I guess I would play it by ear on the day, depending on how much space I had on my CF card. The speelight is a great idea too.
I am not sure what I wold do stroller wise either. It would be a PITA with 2 if your dd didn't use it much. Could they maybe swap so your dd could rest for 10-15 minutes then she could walk again? Maybe some kind of mai-tei sling for your ds?
I'm sure you will have a blast. I really need to get down to London now that I enjoy photographing anything and everything, lol!
yeah I think my son is too heavy for any type of sling and then me wearing a backpack... woah! well we'll have plenty of hands available in case someone gets tired of pushing the stroller. And maybe if my daughter doesn't want to sit down one of us can put our bag in the stroller. Ahh I don't know what we'll do. I'm so worried about running out of space on my CF Card lol so I might shoot just jpeg but gosh I don't know! I have two cf cards but they are 4gb and 2gb. Maybe I should go buy another just in case. I take lots of pictures!
LOL, yeah, I take a lot of photo's too. It's easy for me to take a full 2GB CF card of RAW images in 1 day. That's 210 RAW photo's for me.
What I did last time I went on holiday was made sure that I reviewed what I had taken at the end of the day and got rid of any really obvious bad shots (camera shake, blown beyond saving, too many of the same thing, funny faces or closed eyes (unless I thought I could head swap).
Actually, just buy another card, lol!
Awesome!! I bet you will have a blast.
I have no advice about what to shoot in....I just switched from shooting in raw and Jpeg, but switched back to exclusive jpeg because I just can't see the benefit of shooitn RAW yet. I need more research to understand.
I find that I only shoot in Manual. I don't get the other modes. Like you, I tend to mess up my pictures when I change things around (not that I don't mess things up in M, though )
I'd also suggest taking your speedlite. You never know! We're headed to Miami in July and I'm taking EVERYTHING I own. I don't want to get there and regret not bringing something.
Good luck and I hope you share with us when you get back

oops I didn't answer your question i mean to!
i haven't really seen much of a difference actually but it has been a lot cloudier lately but I'm not sure if that is just normal or what. It was pretty cloudy earlier today and then the sun came out and then it got all cloudy and really windy and gloomy again. A bit odd but that's Norway for ya. So.... I don't really know. But I am very thankful that we didn't go anywhere around this time. And I pray to God that it all clears up by June for when my parents come here! My dad only has a couple weeks vacation from work and taking 1 extra week off. If it is still slow at that time and their flights get canceled I am going to be very sad Hopefully not though. I know a couple of ladies who are stuck overseas until this all clears up. A FB friend is stuck in Amsterdam. Boy I'd LOVE to be there a few extra days!
