    Default a good telephoto lens

I have the canon xsi but with my birtday being this weekend I really want a new lens for it. You were all right as I really do not love my kit lens. I want a lens where if I am on the back patio I can zoom in on my kids jumping on the trampoline. However I don't want one that is so much where I am too close all the time. I wanted to keep the price around 200 since I am asking for it for my bday. I really do want a telephoto but just wondering if there is a lens that starts where my kit lens ends and then goes to telephoto. I think I might try ebay to find one at a good price. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Also, I am just starting to learn how to shoot in manual and I LOVE the pics so much better. My ? is do you often use your light meter when choosing your settings? Like after choosing apeture do you use it to adjust your shutter speed or vise versa or is that just something beginners do? tia

You could go with the normal kit extention of 75-300 mm. It's a fairly inexpensive telephoto (under 200). I'm sorry I can't recommend anything more useful...I don't have a telephoto. It's either that or a marco on my list of nexts

Happy early birthday and hope you get some good advice!

I have the Tamron 28-75mm. Great portrait lens, and works well for zooming without too much zooming... if that makes sense.

I have the Tamron 28-75mm as well and I love it hardly ever comes off my camera now.

I looked at the Tamron 28-75mm on Amazon and it's $450 even on sale (with a "list price" of $1,023!)

I want to buy a good zoom too but mine will be for bird/wildlife photography so I'll need a minimum of 300mm on the far end....which means lots of dough lol....

that's funny cause my choices were either the 28 75 or the 75 300 mm. I might go with a cheap brand for now on ebay and then get something good this summer.

For those interested. I got my Tamron 28-75 for $310 with free shipping on UsedCameras.com. I think the original price was 350 and I found a 15% off promo code online. It's rare the lens is on the site, but when it is you can get a good deal. I wouldn't hesitate buying from them again.
