Any ideas on how to get a sharper shot without the noise when I am shooting in a badly lit gym without a speedlight?
I think I have tried everything to shooting with a wide ap to let in as much light as possible cause my ss has to be high for the movement. Also tried shooting with my ap closed more and bumping up the iso for more light. We have 2 tournaments this weekend so just wondering on any way to capture this without the noise?
I'm thinking I might just have to buy a speedlight.
Gigi??? Maybe you would know with the martial arts?

Is this as high as your ISO goes? You can always run Noiseware (Noiseware Community Edition is free and good) afterwards. I'm sure a speedlite can help you. Not sure how it works in a setting like this, whether you can bounce your flash, or if you would have to use it straight on. I've never tried in a big area before. In my house, if I use it straight on, I get those flash shadows.
no my iso can go to 6400. Never used noisewear but I am going to check it out thanks!
You won't be disappointed! It works great![]()
I was going to suggest noiseware.
I always use a speedlight at judo tournaments though. I aim it straight up but I take a rubber band and secure a white business card to the back so that a slight bit bounces forward. It's not enough to disturb those on the mat, but enough to add a touch of fill to the image.
I open up pretty wide - like you did in your example, around f/2.4 or so. I keep my iso high. And since I am using the speedlight, I can drop my shutter speed just a little to around 1/200-1/250. The flash helps to freeze the action.
Here's one example from Logan's belt test at judo last night:
f/2.2 ss=1/200 iso=800 (I really can't go much higher w/ my camera)
I am using the speed light here - bounced just as I described above.
Hope that helps! Have fun at the tournaments and come back and share afterward!
Best,

Thanks I will be trying out noisewear for sure! I always hear everyone talking about it but I have never tried it. My thing with flash is just like you said Gigi, I don't want to distract the wrestlers but the buisness card idea sounds great! I still need to buy a speedlight. I will share for sure after the tournaments and my first trial with noisewearHoping for 1st!! win win win thats all we care about lol totally kidding!!!
Oh and great shot Gigi! Did he move up in his belt?
