I have a newborn opportunity!

A good friend at work's daughter is going to have a baby girl soon (she's not quite 37 weeks). I'm friends with her daughter on FB - we've hung out a few times at work functions where my friend brought her daughter along. I took a deep breath and asked my friend's daughter if I could take pics of her daughter right after she's born, and she not only responded with a "yes," but she's really excited!

So, here's my questions. First, I don't have a *nice* lens - just my kit lens. Do you think I can get some decent pics of a newborn with a kit lens that is only 3.5 when wide open?

Also, I don't own a bean bag and don't want to spend the $ on one right now (each of my kids are getting one for Christmas from my parents). Any ideas on what I could do instead? I'm thinking of piling a bunch of blankets in a mound and then draping one nicer one on top and bringing it up behind and clamping it to two tall chairs as a background.

And, finally, I'm going to use all natural light - would you say that morning would be the best time, or would late afternoon/evening be better?

I'm going to spend all my time between now and then scouring ILP for newborn shoots/poses!

That is great Krista! Lucky you Smile I have yet to do a newborn! Do you have dolls? I would practice on a baby doll first for positions, lighting, etc...and use a reflector..I'm sure that would help...see what you can do in your own home first. Post here for tips if you want! I have no tips though since I have yet to shoot a newborn. Smile good luck and have fun!

Would you be able to borrow a bean bag from somebody? I borrowed one from my aunt for a session before I bought one of my own. Not saying the blankets wouldn't work b/c I've never tried that...just throwing that out there! Have fun!!! Biggrin

hooray for a newborn!

you can always use a boppy, but it's not the same squishiness. are you on freecycle? you could always post a wanted for one there.

the light really depends on where you're taking the pictures. are you doing them at your house? if so, you need to find out where your light is best and at what time. and you CAN do them with your kit lens, but if the light's not good enough, you'll have to up your ISO. it's all practice anyway, so don't stress over it. Wink Oh, and when I did my first newborn, I put a bunch of poses from ILP in a word document to look at together for inspiration.

That's an awsome idea, Gwen! I was looking on ILP last night and my mind is swirling with ideas.

I'm actually doing the shoot at my friend's house (the mom-to-be's mother). I think I'll probably set up in her dining room next to her sliding glass door.

I've already told the mom-to-be not to expect too much. This isn't even PBing - it's just practice, really. I really do hope to get some decent shots though - for her.

I like the idea of practicing with a doll. Lord knows we have enough of those around here. Thanks, Loida! I'll probably do that this weekend - you all can take a look at the preliminary pics and let me know what you think. Thanks!

I have yet to do a newborn, although I have had opportunites, just no blankets! I think Gwen's idea is great and good for you for getting out there and practicing!
