So I have this shoot coming up on Saturday. It's my friend's sister's engagement photos. This is going to be the very first time I'm charging for a session. I've actually been super excited about it since my friend first asked me if I would be interested. I'm trying to be as professional as possible, but I think I made a mistake. She called me last Friday, but I just got a new phone, and totally forgot to set up the voicemail until last night. Sure enough, she had called and left me a message. Instead of gaining my barrings first, I immediately called her back. Mistake #1. She was really hard to talk to over the phone. Lots of awkward pauses during our conversation.
She said that her fiance is going back to school on the 8th or 9th, so they need to be done really soon. That only left this coming weekend. We decided on Saturday. But whoops! we were going to get Carson's 4 year pictures done at Portrait Innovations. Mistake #2. Grr! I asked her if any time would be best for her, and she said that she's open to any time of day. I haven't been outdoors taking photos in about a month, so I haven't been paying attention to the light outside. I asked if 10am would be good for her. But now I'm thinking that will probably be mid-day sun, right? Mistake #3.
Is the sun going to be too harsh? Normally, I'd just pick a location that has some shade, but with all the leaves off the trees, I'm just not sure that's possible this time of year. Should I call her back and ask to do more around 3:30 or 4, or do you think it won't be too bad at 10?
I'm not sure what time zone you're in, but here in Mobile, AL (central) 10 is kinda in the middle. Light starts getting harsh at my house nearing 10:30, but we do live on a hill with a good number of trees.
I have always been a firm believer in being honest. If it were me I would call and explain that you had a lot going on and that in the excitement you didn't take the lighting this time of year into consideration. I would let her know that while you could get good pictures around 10, that you think 3:30 might be better.
I think calling her back with a specific time and location is fine, but if she can only do the early time, choose a really neat shopping center area with cool architecture (lots of open shade) .
TBH The biggest thing is that you said you were going to PI to get photos done of C. I hope you didn't tell her this, esp if you are charging her. I know if someone told me that (even having experienced tons of PKS) I would have lost some faith in them...
I am sure it will be fine. Good luck!
