January Assignment: Negative Space

About a month ago, we had a good discussion going about two cropping styles: using negative space vs filling the frame. This month we are going to explore using negative space.

Let's see the many ways negative space can be used to create an impact in your photos!

Best,

OK. As this is something I struggle with, I decided to jump on in. I'm kinda short on models right now though, so Logan's Legos had to fill the bill for now.

I hope to have some different models for my next attempt.

Here are 2 from me.

DH doesn't like this one...but I really love it. He says "I can't see anything, it's really frustrating". I said "it's abstract honey". In fact, it's pretty much exactly what I was going for.

Thanks GiGi! Glad I'm not the only one.

And inspired by Sadie's STUNNING eyelash shot.

Great pics so far! Sadie's & Amber's "eyelash" pics remind me of the ones I did of Eva last June.

I have some negative-space shots to share but they aren't uploaded yet.

And, for the record, Amber - I can tell exactly what that is a picture of. You look like you were inside your car parked in a driveway. Am I right??

I'm really interested in this challenge but am having trouble finding some "inspiration". Some of these are so creative!

Love the sunset! Wish I was there right now!

My 2 year olds love for her barrel of monkeys inspired this.

I like that, Amanda!!!
Nice bird shot, Kerry! On "this side of the ocean" that would be a Red-breasted Nuthatch, except ours have a white "eyebrow" above the black stripe; is that what it is for you as well? lol

edit: I know now it's a different (but close) species, Sitta europaea, versus Sitta canadensis here. Don't mind my rambling, I'm a bird nut Smile

I like your ramblings, lol! I'm getting better with my birds. Yes, it's a nuthatch. It is strange to see that you have the same bird but with a white stripe. How bizarre!

Kerry ... You also need to add the first shot you put the in the flash back Friday thread to this one. Both awesome examples of using negative space!

It's really amazing how we have lots of similar (and some the same) species, and demonstrates evolution and how at one time the land was all connected....

OK ... still not the best effort ... this is obviously something on which I need a lot of work.

but at least my puppy girl was too cold to run away from me and my camera this time. Wink

D'oh! I hadn't even considered the negative space on that shot.

Eh... I tried. I am so bored with everything I own. It's so hard for me to think outside the box when it comes to photography. I'm getting so bored and it's been a bit fun trying to think of things to photograph. Semi-interesting things anyway.

does this one count as negative space? I see so many things wrong with this photo (like the blown lights I didn't bother to fix) but oh well! Lol

I took all of these with this challenge in mind. I've also been playing around with my speedlight a lot lately and trying to get my pictures to look as natural as possible. It's been fun. Smile

WOW GUYS! You all are totally blowing me away!!!

Here's one I did at a couple shoot this weekend. There are a LOT of things wrong w/ this photo (thank goodness this is a friend), but I specifically tried to frame it with some negative space.

I am still struggling with this assignment. I have yet to feel like I'm understaning how to use the 'empty space' for dramatic effect (or otherwise). I guess it just feels forced to me.

I'm open to any thoughts/suggestions.

Amy, that board game is AWESOME!!!!

And Sadie ... your pic really made me smile! It's cold here, but we barely even got frost on the leaves (it's beyond dry).

Great job everyone!

Cute, Sadie! Thanks Loida & GiGi, it's the game Trivial Pursuit Millennium, which we were all playing last week. The die is sitting on the gameboard. I love Trivial Pursuit and we hadn't played in eons! I want to get a newer version. We have 3-4 ancient versions LOL

My DH is just like that!!! I took one from the dashboard tonight while he was driving, can't wait to see how it turned out when I get home (too hard to tell on the LCD screen).

I'm trying again, but I still don't think I'm making much progress with this technique. *sigh*
