JMK, but looking for some CC

These are some pics I took of the kids yesterday at a family get together. Mostly I'm looking for CC on comp and processing.

1a. I really like this picture for some reason. I'm not sure exactly why. Alaina does a lot of looking down when I try to take her picture.. How could I make shots like this more interesting? I wish I had one that was zoomed out more to show the rocks she was holding, but she was too close to me and I had to snap quickly.

2. I feel like the color is off in this one, but I'm not sure how to fix it. It was overcast, but he did have some beautiful filtered light on his face.

3. I swear he really is full of smiles... Not sure why most of his pictures are of him with this blank stare.

4. She was getting sleepy.. This one wasn't so close cropped, but in order to straighten it out, I had to crop some. I just wanted to make sure I got a picture before she sat back up, which happened to be about 2 seconds after this shot.

5. She was trying to figure out what someone was doing I think...

6. I was trying to get a pic with good catch lights from the natural light. Color seams a bit off, but again, I'm not sure how. Wish I hadn't have chopped of the very top of her head.

7. This last one is strictly for a laugh. It's SOOC. I think it's just hilarious how I caught his baby fat flopping as he was running. :) Now I have an idea of what he will look like as an old man. lol

8. I did a little color editing on this one.

Just a few ideas as I am not the best at editing myself. For the first shots of your daughter. If she is always looking down try to lay on the ground. I would lay right on my back and shoot up at her at looking down at you. The 2nd set of your son I would like more if he was to the right. Just my personal opinion but I like photos more where the subject is not looking outside of the photo. In some cases it works but I prefer when the subject body is tuned to the inside of the frame if that makes sense So number 2 and 3 I would place him to the right and 5 and 6 I would place her to the left. jmo:) Keep working , I remember seeing you a long time ago and I do see you growing:)

Just heading to bed so not going to comment on too much at the moment.

With #1 if she looks down a lot don't be afraid to get down to her level to take pictures, then you can try and get her eyes in the shot. I'm often crawling on the floor to take pictures of my kids, dogs and cats.

I agree completely about them looking out of the frame. That's generally what I try to do. I was cutting DH out of the one with DS and there was a walkway to my DD's left. I've been trying to get pictures that aren't filled up completely by their faces, but with these situations perhaps it would have been best?

I haven't tried laying down to look up at her. It might actually make her smile. :) or, she might smack the camera ;)

This age is so SO hard to photograph!! Bribes start to work though, so if you haven't tried yet, you might want to. Now, if you're looking for more candid shots, then I would suggest setting up a theme session with them. Have props for them to play with so you can tell a story with the images. Do you have a special tricycle, or riding car? We've got a very nice metal pedal firetruck that the kids have, and I've always wanted to do a theme with it, but have never gotten around to doing it yet. You know...something like that.

The thing is, you have your basics down pat. I remember being at this point. What I needed to do to push myself to the next level is to get creative with it. Shoot with purpose, instead of just following the kids around and shooting them playing like I had been. It's hard to get to that next level. Once you do, though, you start getting more confident with yourself, and the ideas just start rushing in.
