JMK - February Photo Shoot

Took Nathan to the "run around park" two days ago. It had been quite some time since our last shoot, and I needed to get some February pictures.

He is getting harder and harder to shoot. He just wanted me to put the darn camera away. Oh well...I think I managed to get some decent ones anyway. I'm trying to get more creative shooting him, but not sure I'm succeeding.

CC not required...just a share really. I'm fully aware of the multitude of mistakes in these.

Different for lots of these. Generally when I'm using the 70-200mm I try to keep my ap around 3.5, but will put it down to 2.8 if Nathan is looking at me straight on or is farther away from me.

What's cool about flickr is you can click on the images here...which will take you to the image on my flickr page and you can click on "more properties" to see the camera settings used for each image. Anytime you see a picture here with that little green border around it...you can click on those and find the settings.

He's a doll, I love his eyes in the 1st two and his smile in the last one. I like your siggy pic too.

I was thinking of mentioning a "tip" about the flickr image borders yesterday, for anyone who (like me) doesn't like the border they put around your pics: you can hide the border without losing the link, just by adding the text border="0" inside the photo HTML code....I just put it in place of the "alt" part which is basically useless. (But you can leave the alt code there if you want)

Ditto, wow can't believe I can actually see that about the color now!

I think they're totally creative, I would put a few in your children's portfolio for sure! Are you still using your target when you go out and take these?

I just love your editing, as always. Did you use a screen layer at all on these? I'm trying to hone in on what it is I love about certain people's pp. Yours is definitely one of them, it's like the clean of clean.

Thanks!

No target for when I shoot the boy...just too difficult, he certainly won't hold it, and we change lighting too much...so I just take care of color in post.

No, don't use screen layer. Most of my post work these days is done in Lightroom (same process as ACR) and I just add a touch of contrast and saturation and vignette in Photoshop. To keep the images looking clean, I take good care of my shadows and am very careful with contrast on skin. Nailing exposure in camera and using high quality light goes a LONG way to get really clean looking images.

Interesting about the screen layer aspect--I learned something new today about using it on photos (I Googled it after reading the new replies here). I've used the screen blend mode tons of times in the past while making graphics, but have never tried it for enhancing a photo.

Thanks Amber!

Yeah, I was editing maternity pics last night for a friend in Lightroom and then transferring them to photoshop. I was reading one of Andrea Joki's thread about how Lightroom is going to be the premier photographers tool and photoshop will go back to graphic designers. I can't imagine not using the both of them. Lightroom will always be more frustrating to me than photoshop! I guess if a pic is perfect I wouldn't use photoshop, but I haven't had that luxury yet. Batch editing in Lightroom is so frustrating to me.

So, when you're adding contrast in Lightroom, are you mostly just looking at skin? Or would you then add more in photoshop masking out skin?

Every time I transfer a photo to photoshop, it asks if I want to change the pic to my color space. Do I need to change color settings in Lightroom?

Sounds like you may need to change the color space settings in Lightroom...it defaults to something that doesn't work great in some web browsers (some of you may remember the gray baby fiasco!). Make sure you're using sRGB in Lightroom.

When I adjust the overall photo in lightroom...yes, I pay closest attention to the skin. Then if other parts of the photo need more saturation or contrast, I use the adjustment brush to do that. It's fantastic! I also LOVE LOVE LOVE the batching capabilities. It's not as useful when working on pictures of my boy, but for my headshot sessions, it saves hours and hours of time! I imagine it would be even more handy for wedding photography.

In photoshop...I have an action that really provides the level of pop I love...so it's really quick for me to do that on the selected images in photoshop. I usually do mask back the skin though.

Amber, he's such a cutie! I love it when you do shares of Nathan like that. Again, you really have a knack for nailing the exposure and focus. I still struggle with finding the best light.

and you're making me wish I had Lightroom. I didn't download the beta version of the latest because I really can't afford to add it to my computer. I'd rather save for a camera upgrade. Smile

Your photos are just amazing to look at. The colors and crispness is just awesome. I think my fav is #2. His smile is so sweet.
