Default Just a share: Flash experiment

I know we're mostly natural light folks here, and that's what I'm most interested in learning to do well, but I have REALLY been enjoying this CreativeLIVE course on using ETTL flash, and so I tried a before/after shot of Micah today, one without flash and one with flash in the same spot. The first shot was a bit OOF and he's not smiling, so it's not superb; but that aside, the light difference is cool. The flash shot just highlights his eyes so well and gives such nice light overall. It's definitely something I'd like to learn more of, especially for shooting outdoors to underexpose some of the background to get rich blue skies and still really light the subject well.

    Here's the shot without flash:

    And here's the shot with:

Those are my two comparison shots, but I have to share this one too; it cracks me up with his nose up in the air! I converted it for fun.

Here's the web site for the guys who are teaching the course; they use ETTL all the time and have some fantastic images!

WOW! These look amazing! I'd say you're rocking that flash already!

And even those of us who prefer natural light know there are going to be times when it is just not possible. Learning these techniques can only make you grow as a photographer.

    Good work, Tracy!

    Thanks!

This one might not be to everyone's tastes as I made it a bit more dramatic -- the guys teaching the class do a lot of sports figures and do a lot of very dramatic lighting, starting with really underexposing the background. I underexposed here by about 1-1/3 stop and then shot this and I love the warmth and glow of her skin.

Just fun to try! And you're right, GiGi... Natural light isn't always possible, and I love having more tools in my arsenal. It's fun to experiment and see that flash isn't so daunting, and does NOT have to be unnatural, even with just one speedlite, when I actually try it. Now if I could just get wireless, since all I have right now is a relatively short coiled cable to get the flash off-camera.
