    Default lenses

I have the 50 1.8 and 35 1.8 that I normally use (plus 2 kit lenses that I RARELY use)

I use my nifty 50 more than anything, since I do mainly portraits. Today is my birthday, and I'm working on my husband for a new lens. So, WWYD? upgrade to the 50 1.4G or get an 85 1.8? I REALLY want that 50...but is it that much better than the 1.8?

Um...the 85! The 50 you have is great and it might be nice to have another quality lens at a longer length.

IMHO, the 85 is a much better portrait length.

Arg...everyone on ILP said the 50! I think I'll borrow the 85 from a friend of mine and see how I like it.

Wow...I'm shocked that everyone at ILP said 50. You already have a 50. The 1.4 is faster and quiter...but I'm not sure you'd really notice the quality difference. I dunno...all of my portrait work is done at 100mm and farther away, so I say hands down the 85...but that's me.

Ah...just checked the thread. I think they were answering the question of whether the 1.4 was worth the upgrade...and the answer is definitely yes. It IS...BUT, if you don't have a quality lens at the higher focal length...I'd say wait.

Of course...if you don't think that you'd benefit from the extra length on the 85mm, then go with the 50. I think the question can only be answered by you. What do you want a new lens for? Are you frustrated with your 50? Are you constantly feeling like you can't get the close ups you want...or that you're standing too close to your subject?

I agree with Amber. I have the 50 mm 1.8 and the 85 mm 1.8, definitely hands down on the 85mm. The 50 mm at 1.8 is very good. If you want to really upgrade, I would suggest 85mm f1.2L.

I woud have said the 85mm too. I find that with the ages my kids are now, they don't like me being in their faces, so I do alot of my portrait stuff with my 70-210mm as I don't have a longer prime.

I would say if I already have a 50mm, I would go for the 85 or something longer like that. GL & I hope you get what you want! I am dying for a new one, but it'll be a while!

If you can borrow the 85, I would do that first. That's great that you can borrow lenses!

So, looks like I'm getting both. YIPPEE!!!
DH got me the 50 1.4 for my birthday, and then I'm selling my never used kit lenses plus my nifty 50 and am using the money for the 85! So excited. I'm definitely a prime girl, and will be happy with my 3 for a very very long time.

that's so cool that you're getting both! I'm wanting the 85 ... but for my indoor work, I heart my 30mm
