long time... Just wanted to share some new pix of Alana

wow, I've been mia for a while, I do lurk from time to time, my birth board is lucky if I ever get to post.

I took some valentines pix of Alana last weekend and wanted to share. This was my first real time using my speedlite. I struggled with how to use it and ended up in manual bouncing it up and a little back on the ceiling. There is a large window to her left and a reflector to her right. It was a rainy day so that didn't really help much

Anywho, here is what I have edited so far, I have maybe 2 more I will really edit but wanted to share these before I finish them all. I hope I can come up with a cute valentines template to quickly print and mail this week :0)

same settings for all
Exposure: 0.017 sec (1/60)
Aperture: f/4.5
Focal Length: 50 mm
ISO Speed: 400
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
Flash: On, Fired

1.

2.

3.

eta: 4. (maybe wrinkles on paper?)

1. and 4. I'm not really happy with, and I'm trying to figure out why her skintones are different in 2. & 3. maybe I missed a step

thanks for looking!! can't wait for fall to have a newborn to take pix of Blum 3

love the seating you have Smile where did you get it?
at this size I can't tell if the focus is on the lolli or not. I'd try a different crop so she's not so centered.

These are great valentines pics

1- adorable. I do think the focus fell on the chair though. She just looks a bit soft- but maybe that's me.
2- great capture- only thing that bugs me- the shadow of the sucker.
3- probably my fav.
4- least fav. She looks soft, and maybe oof?

I am NO help with skintones. She is so stinking adorable though. LOVE her hair! Biggrin

Alana is ADORABLE!! You have some great pics to choose from. I hear ya on the speedlite. I use mine all the time, don't know anything technical...just bounce and hope it looks good Wink

My fav is #4! With #1 as a close second. I would just tilt #4 slightly to the left, seems a bit off (looking at it again and just can't tell if it's tilted slightly or not...is it just me?)

#2 would be my fav, but you can see the shadows of the lolli and arm on her shirt. Same with #3.

Your little girl is really adorable ...she looks like she is enjoying that lollipop!

I think my favorite of the bunch is #1 and with 2 and 3 the angle and the shadow of her lolli are really distracting. Do you use a diffuser? I find it makes a huge difference.

I like the last one, but again, there is a shadowing going on..

Overall though, these are too cute, i like them!

thanks!! the pink stool is from ikea, love it!!! and the baby doll bed is from Ikea too, I just threw it in there really quick for something different. I was hoping that opening the ap more than usual would help with my focus. I also tried selecting my focus points instead of using center and recomposing.

Any suggestions for other crops, I try to get her eye on the top third, but wasnt sure what else to do with it

Thanks for all the input!!! The dreaded shadows, I did have to fix them on the background for the full body shots, I tried to move her as far away as I could but I still got them, the only thing I can think of is that I was just bouncing my speedlite and maybe I would do better using it off camera?? I tried multiple ways to bounce it and this produced the least amount of background shadow but then I get it elsewhere... guess I just need to practice practice practice Blum 3

thanks Jennifer!!

I am so bad and getting the camera angle straight, I had to adjust every single one of these in lightroom to make the molding straight, I think the bed in the last one isn't straight and that throws everything off. I ended up using #4 on the front of the card, cropped it a bit and brightened her up a little

okay I need to learn how to multi quote, is there a way :):)

I did have the diffuser that came with the speedlite, its a 580ex, I hope the numbers are right, it was my xmas present, awesome hubby huh!! its just a little box that slips on over the speedlite, maybe the flash was set too strong?? now that I think about it, I set it for the full body shots and then just walked up to her for the closeups which probably made the flash to high for that shot, wonder if thats why the lollipop shadows are so strong there??

okay no more quotes

to multitquote, click the button that has the "+ on it for each post you want to quote, then click "post reply" - all of the posts you selected will be multiquoted in your post edit window. Wink

okay, now that I'm on my good monitor, I can comment. the pictures looked good on my laptop, but on this monitor I'm seeing color and focus issues. however, I'm due for a recalibration, so take my color comments with a grain of salt for right now. I'm seeing color casts in all of the photos. I know that she has more of an olive complexion, but I'm feeling like there's some leftover colors from the background all over the whole photo. That doesn't make sense though, so I'm wondering if it's just my need to recalibrate. just wonder what would happen if you took a little extra red out.

I agree on the previous comments on the focus. where are you aiming your focus points?

you definitely want to try to bounce the speedlite off the window if you can. that will get you the best catchlights and better light than if you bounce off the ceiling. I'm wondering if when you bounced, it also bounced some of the color from the backdrop. I'm still pondering why I'm seeing the extra color. Gonna recalibrate this morning though and see if that helps. Smile

thanks Gwen! I have never thought or seen to bounce off a window, I will definitely be trying that.

I actually picked my focal points this time, which I normally don't do, I chose the top or top left/right points and centered them on her face/eyes. I'm using bbf too. I thought opening the ap would of helped me out this time. maybe it was my lighting/settings combination. I usually see that if you use flash, you can use a slower ss, so thats what I did.

going back and looking at them, I am starting a notice her being soft and not very sharp, I can't wait until summer and I can go outside and get good lighting!! I have printed these but haven't received them yet, my prints 9 times out of 10 look good focus wise. Guess I just need to keep practicing, what else could it be
