this may be a dumb question but...

when you shoot in RAW, what is the file extension of the images and are the files opened in PS or LR? (my first time shooting in RAW) I just did some shots with my friend for practice and i know a few of them came out pretty good, would be a shame if lost them

TIA

cr2 is the extension. use PS to import the pictures from your camera. when I use Windows to copy it, it converts them somehow. ugh.

.cr2 is the extension for Canon. Only ACR will recognize RAW files and only the newer versions will allow you to open raw files straight from your camera. You can't just open RAW files straight into PS. When I could only use Elements 6.0, I had to convert to Adobe RAW files before opening with ACR. Even with the ACR that came with CS4, I had to download the update before I could open the 5Dmk2 files because it is a newer camera than my version of ACR. I hope that makes sense.

ETA: Other programs will recognize RAW files. I was just referring to the Adobe programs. You could use the RAW software that came with your camera too.

for me, I use PSE7 - in the organizer I import from my camera, and am able to view the thumbnails of all of the RAW files. then when I open one, it goes right to ACR first.

If you want to open RAW files directly in photoshop you will need the proper RAW plugin. Nikon has a NEF plugin that comes on the disk with the included software. If you need the Nikon version I can locate it and post a link for you to download it. the Nikon version, as far as i'm aware, will only work on .NEF files though.

I sent Steph's post to DH and he was able to get it ready for me so my RAW files opened no problem Smile
