Monitor issues and Shutterfly order :-(

I just had this image printed at Shutterfly, on a desktop plaque (a $20 item) for a gift:

When it arrived today, I was appalled to see distinct gray shadowing in the areas where I'd extended the canvas and placed the text. I figure it must be my monitor, because I had this type of problem with a photo of Nora against a white backdrop, which many of you noticed but I didn't see at all till I viewed it on DH's tablet.

The weird thing is, I had a very similar product printed through GreetingCardUniverse.com -- see this URL Friend - Thank You Card with Purple Flower | Greeting Card Universe -- and there is no problem at all. The card looks perfect, just as it does on my monitor.

It's just so frustrating to order something and then have it arrive looking like crap, when I didn't even know it was a problem... especially given that I've had success printing the product before, just with different text layers. Sad

Anyway, just had to vent, because I'm so disappointed and am just longing for a computer upgrade and a better monitor, and to one day be calibrated.

ETA: DH checked on another monitor, and I checked on the tablet, and it still loos fine, not as it does on the Shutterfly order. I so don't get this. Sad ???

Hmm...I see a little something towards the top if I angle my screen (laptop). It may be exaggerated because the print quality is different from the other place? I use Shutterfly a lot, but the print quality is definitely different from a pro lab, but much better than Walmart. Maybe that's the issue?

I, too, am longing to be calibrated. One of these days...one of these days...

If you just see a 'little something', Steph, then you're definitely not seeing what showed up either. Because it was a noticeable gray outline about 1/4" above and to the left of the top line of lettering, and then some weird gray shadowing beneath and to the left of the lettering about 2" in circumference, with a white patch partway through the shadowing. I wish I could scan it to show you how bad it is, but it really doesn't make sense to me.

I've been happy with Shutterfly for certain things, but I must say this is the second desktop plaque I've had done, and the first one was for DH's desk at work with the picture in my siggy, and it is VERY yellow compared to my monitor. I had a calendar printed this year from Shutterfly and all of the images looked great, no colour issues, colour as it appears on my monitor. But these plaques are very shiny and perhaps they use a different type of printing process for them or something. Or it's just a straight print but laquered on, I'm not really sure. Still, whatever they do to them, it seems to result in a not-quite-right product.

That's so disappointing. Could you take a picture with your camera comparing the two and send it to Shutterfly's customer service? Maybe they would refund you if they saw how bad it was. I've never dealt with their customer service, so I'm not sure how willing they would be to do it.

Yeah, I think I will try scanning it or taking a picture and let them see it for themselves, and see if there's anything they can do for me. I'll let you know how it turns out!

I see some funny grey lines going diagonally from the top left just under the letter B and towards the stem of the flower. The color of the white above those lines is a different color than the white on the bottom half of the photo....I'm seeing as more cyan.

In fact, there are lots of strange lines going on in that whole area where the text is. While I can definitely see it, it's pretty subtle, so if it came out obvious then it's probably due to sub par printing.

I'm sorry your print came out badly. Did you try contacting them....they might give you your money back they did for me once before.

I'm on a different computer and now I can see gray lines below the B running diagonally down, plus some to the right side of the lettering and more under the lower part of the lettering. I can only just see it though and my screen here is at more of an angle too.

It's at least reassuring to know someone can SEE what I'm talking about -- thanks Amber, Shadow and Steph. But it's also reassuring that it's subtle, and shouldn't have come out so obvious in printing.

If my monitor was better, and calibrated, I probably wouldn't have had this problem to begin with as I would've caught the problem myself. Having said that, if it doesn't appear without really looking for it, I definitely will be complaining to Shutterfly and see what they say.

It looks fine on my screen, but I'm not calibrated either. I hope they can help you, or at least refund you!

This is what I noticed... the slightly cyan tint to the white and VERY subtle diagonal lines. But I wouldn't have caught it if I hadn't already read through the posts.

I'm interested to know what they say if/when you contact them.
