    Default Morning at the River

I really have to share these here. It's probably Mommy goggles, but somehow I am SO in love with these pictures. I feel emotional thinking of the fact that come September, I will not be able to just trek around with Micah like this. It was an idyllic and wonderful spring morning with my beloved little boy.

I'm posting partly because I'd like opinions on the two black-and-white conversions. I don't know why, but somehow I felt that they suited the conversion -- giving a timeless feel to what boys love to do, you know? But I'm curious about how I did and whether you guys agree or not!

This one is HDR-ed because of the midday light, but I love the result. It's so boyishly wonderful!

I fell in love with these too Tracy! My little man is going to K too this fall and it's breaking my heart!

Usually I am a huge fan of B&W, but I really feel the color works best on these. Especially #3. I love love love #2!

These are GREAT! That first one is perfect And I love the framing with the trees in the last one.

As far as the b&w's go, I think I would like to see some more contrast put into them. They look just a bit flat to me as they are right now.

Oooh, oooh, oooh!! I have an idea!! You HAVE to go back with him. He needs to wear overalls and no shirt, and carry a handmade fishing pole. You know, the kind with the stick and the string? Yes!! Oh, I'm kicking myself right now for not thinking of that back in IL. There would have been some perfect spots for that there. Oh, if I find a spot like this, I'm so going to do that with one of my kids.

Sadie, I'm glad to hear you like #3! No one has commented on that one on FB, and I really love it. Totally boy moments.

Steph, what an awesome idea, that'd be SO fun! I have to do some thrift store shopping anyway, so I will need to hunt for some overalls now!

Tracy! I can see why these moments are so dear to you. I love that you've captured this time in his life. If you are anything like me, you will go back to these time and again as he gets older and moves on to other stages.

I love this first one! The color is so bright and vibrant! Did you do anything to his eyes are are they just that bright due to it being midday?

In the second one, I love the tree line and how it moves your eyes through the frame. Boys and water go together so well and I love that we are watching him "unaware."

I'm a fan of b&w and I have to admit, I prefer #3 in b&w. The color is great - his red jacket really stands out among all the earth tones, but I just love the timeless quality of the b&w.

#4 is one I'd really like to see in b&w, simply for the reason I love the treatment in #3 - it just has a timeless feel and I think it would work here.

LOVE LOVE LOVE the way the tree limbs frame Micah here and again, the b&w is my favorite. The water looks a bit more blown in the b&w than in the color. You might try burning it a bit or something like that in order to tone it down as it draws my eye away from Micah. But I still love everything about this one.

I just read everyone else's comments ... I think the contrast looks well done in the b&w's here. I'm usually a fan of very high contrast b&w images, but sometimes, a softer conversion works due to the subject - like I think it does here. It feels like a "stolen moment" - like he's complete oblivious to the camera and the softer conversion works for me, at least.

Anyway ... just my $0.02 worth.

I hope at least ONE of you guys does the overalls w/ the stick fishing pole. Maybe I could convince one of my nephews to let me do that w/ him???? Logan would not do it now and would never have at that age agreed to it either.

I had a couple of people suggest B&W on #4, GiGi, so here it is... Not very high-contrast, but I am kind of torn about high vs. lower contrast in these ones, mainly because of the vintage/timeless quality. Seems more appropriate to keep them a bit lower-contrast. But I did try one higher and liked it too, so I could go either way!!

As far as Micah's eyes in #1, it is mostly the light. I did a light 'unsharp mask' on his eyes, but mostly the ambient light is what you see. And can I just say, although midday light is the hardest to shoot in, I love seeing that these images were taking at that time of day and yet turned out great because we managed to find the right combination of light/shade. Usually I don't feel that 'lucky' with midday light!! I mean, some of them aren't ideal in terms of 'real' portraits, like #2 with the bright spot on the back of his neck or whatever. But overall just looking for the right angle and bits of shade made all the difference.
