I'm so excited! DH got me a gray card for my stocking last Christmas, but for some reason it never seemed to work for me. When used with my Xti I ended up getting such strange colors so I put it away and gave up on it.
Well...someone here recently posted about there being different cards for digital and film...and it got me thinking. I decided to go ahead and get the PhotoVision 14" Digital Calibration Target. It even came with a handy DVD. The thing was a bit pricier than a regular gray card, but I used it yesterday and today for headshot sessions and I'm SOLD! This thing is awesome. I'm usually pretty good with my SOOC exposures, but I always have to spend a good deal of time in post trying to get the colors spot on.
Not any more! This thing is great...set your exposure with it and use the proper exposure to set your custom white balance...it couldn't be easier and it made such a huge difference in today's shoot. It's awesome when something so relatively inexpensive can make such big positive impact. Below are a few SOOC examples...I'm so thrilled.
I imagine it's not going to be as useful for toddler shoots, but for stationary subjects, it's a godsend.
Here is the before...she's holding the target...I just took a shot to see what my camera's indicated exposure and auto white balance would do. I set up the camera so the camera's meter was dead center.
Then I took the shots necessary to make get the proper histogram reading using the target and set that image as the one for my custom white balance. This was the result:
Now, it certainly needs more tweaking, but it's going to be MUCH easier to get the color of that image to look like I want it than the original.

very cool! I debated on the target, but instead asked for the lanyard gray cards. my birthday is Thursday, so we'll see if I get it.
