I don't see much of a difference, except for the 2nd one seems a bit brighter. I like the first one better I guess. I don't have any clue on how to get the shadow off his face though. Great catchlights!

I think I like the pose in #1 better (closer crop). this looks more like a 'year book' photo to me.
As for the shadow, it's there, but I don't see it as a big problem, personally. To get rid of it, you'd probably have to reshoot and turn him slightly more toward the light (which looks like it is coming from camera left).
he's got great catchlights. focus looks really nice. And the shadow creates a rather dramatic light effect. I kinda like it.
If you have to reshoot and can't turn him more toward the light, maybe you could try a reflector on the camera right side to provide some fill lighting.
They both look great! I think I'd choose #1, even though the lighting there is just slightly more "harsh"....His eyes are a bit more open, and his pose is more relaxed.

looks great! love the catchlights. and yes, just turn him a bit towards the light, get him looking a little over his shoulder so he's not full on square, but not an extreme over the shoulder look

I'm on the fence. I like the light on his face better in #2, but I like the crop and comp of #1.
