My Valentine pictures - card added post #16

So I'm doing a digital card for the grandparents ... thought it would be easier to catch the kids by themselves than together. Here are my favorites of them ... and I have to say, trying to edit the color with a strong red background like that is challenging! I made sure I kept the same color temp with Natalie in ACR on all of hers, but I feel like her hair is looking green in at least one of them (there are more on Flickr if you want to go see)

Natalie
Exposure: 0.003 sec (1/400)
Aperture: f/3.2
Focal Length: 30 mm

Andrew (does he look greenish to you? I edited him in the afternoon when it was brighter in this room, and now he's looking greenish on flickr to me)
Exposure: 0.003 sec (1/320)
Aperture: f/3.2
Focal Length: 28 mm
ISO Speed: 400

Exposure: 0.008 sec (1/125)
Aperture: f/3.2
Focal Length: 32 mm
ISO Speed: 400

Jack (DH says he needs a haircut and is threatening to buzz the baby's head - he doesn't want a Jonas Brother baby ... but I love his moppy head!)

Exposure: 0.004 sec (1/250)
Aperture: f/3.2

I have some funny outtakes of Jordan, a crazy close up of Andrew (he wanted to get closer but my lens wouldn't let him) and Jack blowing kisses along with more Natalie in my photostream.

Very cute kids and photos. BTW, I think the hair adds to your son's charm; he's adorable!

Adorable!!! I have to agree, I love the hair! I like longer hair on boys, I think it adds to the boyish looks!

I do see green in the 2nd and 3rd pics, possibly some blue in the 3rd pic instead.
I LOVE the first pic, although the eyes look unfocused to me (?) that's still my favorite though Smile

1) LOVE the crop/angle on this one. I too think the eyes are a bit soft, but it's fine. She's so beautiful!
2) He does look a bit greenish. The color is off on this one on my computer, but I don't know much about that, so ignore me if you want!
3) GREAT! Wouldn't change a thing!
4) Simple perfect! Leave his hair, although Randall would say the same thing as your DH.

Off to check out your photostream!

I had added a curves layer to back down on some of the reds in Andrew, and I guess that turned him green. I deleted the curves layer - this is the image out of ACR.

I redid the one of Jordan, and the numbers are good (in terms of RGB, and I think good on CMYK) .... but it looks a lot warmer.

Does it look better? If so, I need to redo my series of her because I think I will use them all in her school card for her buddies. Wink

New edits are better Gwen. Andrew's looks much better coloring wise. I thought Jordan's looked good to begin with, but I like it better now. I like warmer pics.

Gwen ...

Andrew's new edit looks spot on! LOVE IT! I like the slightly cooler version (first edit) of Jordan better though. I think the warmer skin tones are competing w/ the strong background (which I *love*, btw). I really love the ones of Nat and Jack too. The grandparents are going to really love these! :+) Are you going to put them all together in a collage or keep it a separate print for each kid?

TFS!

thanks girls!

GiGi - I'm torn on the edits of Jordan ... ugh

Probably both. Nat & Jordan are going to have cards for school with just them, and I think I might make individual cards for the boys too, just to have. But for the grandparents, it will be a collage - I will probably crop them into hearts (I just have to figure out how, but that can't be too hard)

The edits are much better. Nice job!

Also, I've noticed that some have mentioned using numbers for RGB. How do you check that? That's one of my biggest challenges right now- coloring.

There's a guy on ILP who wrote an awesome post on skin, and he has one section about RGB. I use the guidance there to help me:

By RGB numbers

This is less common, but RGB numbers can be used in the same way as CMYK numbers. As a general guide, look for the Green value to be 20-30 points higher than the Blue value in sRGB skintones.

People with Photoshop Elements, who don't have CMYK figures in their Info Palette, should learn to use RGB numbers. Actually, this should be of benefit, because you'll really learn how the three channels interact in skintones. It's fair to say that a lot of people who use CMYK numbers don't fully understand the RGB colours they're dealing with. Yep, Cyan is the red channel, and as I described, the red channel is critically important to skin. But, as I stated, the red channel (ie cyan) has nothing to do with the colour of skin - only its shape. The stuff I said about "only adding colour" is only referring to the green channel (magenta) and blue channel (yellow).

If you want to add magenta, go to the green channel in Levels, and move the middle slider to the right. To add yellow, go to the blue channel and move the middle slider to the right. That's simplifying it a bit, but that's it in a nutshell.

If you're in ILP, here's the thread: http://ilovephotography.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=377972

What does "CMYK" stand for?

Here's the finished card ... but I feel like my colors don't match. My parents won't notice, but it will bug me. I went through three versions of Jordan before I ended up with this one, and two versions of each Jack and Andrew. I haven't moved from my seat in 90 minutes (or so) and need to be done for now. I'd love any feedback or suggestions though.

BTW, I have a mom's getaway on Saturday, and DH has threatened to give Jack a crewcut while I'm gone. He's really bothered by the baby's hair. Sad

I'm not sure what you did different with each picture, but by looking at them all together like that I feel like the 2 newer edits (on the left) match really well. The younger girl doesn't look too off but Jack definitely looks like you edited him differently. I would edit him in a more similar way like you did the first 2 kids on the left.

To me, Jack looks like there are more blacks and is darker overall.

Jack looks a touch warmer than the others. However, that doesn't bother me much at all. The only thing that sticks out to me is how much brighter the background is on Jordan's photo than the rest. Skin tones look pretty even to me (with Jack being SLIGHTLY warmer) and I likely wouldn't mess w/ that at all. Looks good. And who knows ... maybe Jack runs a bit pinker in his skin tones. I know in our house, Carlos is much pinker than either Loli or I.

Just my $0.02 worth.

I happen to LOVE the card. The jewels at the bottom are a really nice accent!!!

I am HOPING that work will slow down enough for me to finally get Loli's valentine pics this afternoon.

Take care,
GiGi

Love the card! The skin tones all look very matched except Jack's, who is slightly darker--maybe brighten his face just a touch?

For some reason, Jordan's pics all look very pixely (and her hair looks crimped) on my computers (work and home) and so does Jack's pic in your 1st post, and so do all the photos in the card....and then both girls' hair looks crimped in the card. But the other pics look smooth (including your siggy pics). Am I the only one?

Here's another edit of Jack ... I'm wondering if I should tilt him since everyone else is tilted too?

Amy - not sure what you're seeing, I don't see it on my end. strange!

Oooh that looks really good with Jack's face brightened!

Yes the pixely-ness is very strange...in the card, the girls' hair looks crimped and the boys' eyes look pixely. But not all the pics in the thread look pixely.

Nice job! I'd be interested to see what Jack looks like tilted since they are all tilted like you said. But, I think it looks really nice. Smile

I tilted Jack, and I'm loving the result!

Amy - Do you have a flickr account? If so, add me as a friend and then I can add you and then you can tell me if you see the pixelation in any other versions of it.

Hi, I like the tilt! He balances the others out nicely! Just a note, I'm on my husband's laptop right now and there's no pixelation or crimping going on here.

Yes I do have a Flickr account--I'm looking you up right now. Smile

I see the crimping. I thought it was strange....must be my monitor?

LOVE the most recent edit!! Jack tilted makes it flow a lot better. The colors look more consistant, too.

On a side note, you better tell your DH he better NOT cut Jack's hair!!! A trim, OK. Cut, NO!!!

OK here on my home PC again....I checked on your Photostream and there's no crimping....and now today there's no crimping or pixely-ness on any pics in this thread anymore. So odd! I loved the outtakes in your Photostream Smile

I couldn't get to the flickr page at work, but here at home I don't see the the distortion. Very strange.
