How does this look to you?

If it matters, to me it looks soft around her hair and face compared to some of the other portraits I've seen you post.

I am on uncalibrated monitor so not sure if my CC would be legit. I agree about it being soft around her face. Did you do any smoothing on her face? The bridge of her nose looks bright.

The only thing I'm not a fan of is how soft it is- it's like she doesn't pop in from the bokeh- does that make sense? ..

Yeah, it's definitely not as crisp as your usual. It's soft and I think it's the hair in her face that is a bit bothersome. IMO

Forgot to sharpen this one for web...so that might explain a lot of the softness...though the softness on one part of her face is due to a fix I had to do.

But if the softness is the most bothersome thing, then I suppose that's good. This was a major change at the client's request. I couldn't tell if it looked wonky because I know too well what the original looks like.

The original:

LOL! She wants both versions, but she liked her face the best in this image from all the ones I took of her that day and she needs a headshot for her website. She wanted me to take her daughter out for one version of the photo. YIKES! Had to take body and hair from another photo.

I'm not, and after this I really need to change my policy. Here is the response I just got from the client regarding the re-re-touched picture.

"Yes! I love it! Wow! You are amazing.

I would love to use it on my web site except for a couple of things..

Is there any way to fix the hair over my eye a bit, maybe by copying a piece of my eye from another shot and putting it over the hair? Also, can we edit in a neater version of my hair on the bottom, so it is less frizzy, more professional looking? I know it was a little neater in some of the earlier shots we took."

I want to shoot myself in the eye! I asked her to look through the images and find one where the hair is the way she would like it and told her I couldn't promise that I could fix it. What I wanted to say was "go fly a kite! I've already put several hours into this photo for no extra charge. As for the hair over the eye!!!! She has NO idea how hard eye and hair fixes can be. If I really thought I could have fixed it well, I would have done it in the original image.

Wow! Great job I would never have guessed it included her daughter!

Umm...if it's so easy to do why did she hire a professional!?!? Some people eh! Good luck, when you've got it done I'd love to see the finished product! Smile

Good luck!

oh geez! at first I didn't see anything wrong with it that it as just too soft but now I can see the edit. And wow....she wants so much done to her! Why don't you just reshoot here and just her? Maybe it would be easier. But....you rock Amber! I would have never guessed Smile

Wow! Nice work! But I agree a reshoot would be tons easier! I would defintiely add a clause to your contract that specifically puts an extra charge on major touch-ups. That way she will have to decide how worth it is to her! And you would get paid for all that work! That is ridiculous!

Just to rant some more...this is not the only fix I'm doing for her. She also wants me to fix her teeth in a few images. Now, I don't like changing something fundamental about someone, but because she's a repeat customer, I did it...and at no extra charge (ugh!).

Definitely adding a clause to my contract about major re-touching at maybe $50/estimated hour.

Oh, and a re-shoot is TOTALLY unnecessary. There are TONS of perfectly lovely shots of this woman. I would not do a re-shoot on my dime because in this instance, I did my job perfectly.

I totally agree that you shouldn't reshoot her for free. I was just thinking that if you were charging fot your time it might become apparent to her that a reshoot would be more economical!

yikes!

you have gone so far beyond what you should have done ... and you know this. definitely a learning experience in terms of the contract. I know the work involved in that kind of editing, and it's a lot! you did an incredible job, I can't believe she wanted even more done. she has no idea, does she? I think when she asked for the hair change that might have been a good time to mention that you could, for more money. what a tough spot you're in since it wasn't in your contract. and the teeth, that's insane! I mean, if she wants her teeth fixed, she should see an orthodontist, they specialize in that. you photographed her as she looks, why isn't she happy with that?

Wow!!! I would tell her that there's an extra fee to cover the amount of time you're putting into it! That's ABSURD! Does she expect you to do magic?! I mean, I know you could... Lol but jeez!!! I think you did an awesome job!

Here is what I've done for the final proof. I am NOT doing any more to this photograph!!! As it is it feels and looks to me like a terrible hodgepodge mess. There are three different photographs here. Face from one photo, body from another, and hair from yet another. UGH! I hate it.

sorry, I don't mean it in a bad way. I think you did a fabulous job! But she's asking you to turn the picture into Frankenstein by stealing parts from other places ... ay yi yi

I think a good response would be " I sure can! My rates for retouching beyond standard touch ups are XXX/hour" . She's lucky that you went to all of that work for her, I hope that she appreciates it! You did a great job!

And Jen had the right idea by putting 3 x's in that post. hat should have cost a zillion bucks to do. You are the photoshop wizard!!!

sounds like she wanted to be made into someone who she's not. or maybe a reshoot would have helped. but i don't think people know how much time and work goes into editing stuff like that. maybe they think you just do a couple clicks and voila! you are the master of photoshop Blum 3 I try to clone a silly little thing out and it annoys me. lol I am not a fan of my own cloning work. Smile i hope you start charging people in the future. you deserve it!
