need help w/ judo collage

I'm back at it trying to come up w/ something nice for DH's brown belt exam pictures.

I like the way this one is going better than my last attempt, but something still feels really OFF and I can't quite put my finger on it.

Any/all suggestions would be MOST appreciated.

I think one thing that bothers me is that my one accent color is blue, but SANKYU is a *brown* belt. It just didn't feel right w/ brown either when I tried that. I also am not thrilled with the horizontal bar across the bottom. I tried a selection w/ a gradient on it (grey to black) and then layered an image of DH's judo gi on top of it. I like the paterning, but I'm thinking it may not work real well here. I dunno. I just can't put my finger on what seems so OFF to me. I'm hoping maybe I've been looking at it too long and one of you can put me back on the right track.

TIA guys! I truly appreciate it!

To me it seems too dark over all, maybe you could lighten the background color a bit. Im not digging the horizontal bar either. Maybe if it were either on the back or the front of the poster instead of in the middle iykwim? Altho I see why you placed it in the middle.... This is tough, its a nice collage, but Im like you where Its just not "there" yet. Could you possible take a pic of a brown belt, and then cut it out and use it as the horizontal bar??? IDK

THAT'S A GREAT IDEA about the belt! I'll give that a try later today (dang work keeps wanting me to WORK today) Smile maybe that's what it's missing.

THANKS!

OK ... so I changed up the background a bit. It is a bit lighter this way. I think the vignette is a bit much ... need to dial that back some more on my next edit. But I'm not completly sold on the flag being in there like that. What do you think?

BTW ... I *love* the brown belt for the horizontal bar. I've been playing w/ the opacity of it ... not sure if I'll leave it this way or back off on the opacity so that you can see more of DH's gi behind it. It's a different look. Just can't decide which way I like it right now. Wink

As always, any/all feedback MUCH appreciated!

Thanks again,
GiGi

I am still not liking that horizontal bar. Is there anyway you can maybe reduce the opacity of it, so that its not so pronounced. The background color is a bit better - but maybe choose a bit more brighter - like a bit of light brown or something to just check to see how that goes. Also, the fencing texture is a bit distracting - can you try it without that first before changing the background color?

holy crap I just lost my whole post. ugh. sucks because I'm shrt on time and I already typed a lot to you. but because you're a good friend, I will do it again. Wink

the fence background does nothing for me - I don't feel that it adds to your collage at all. I think you're better off finding some kind of brown background (which looks great with blue as a color combo) and either really reducing the opacity of your bar/belt, or doing away with the bar altogether. just my initial take.

and "go Carlos!"

I am not into the fence background either. I do like the idea of the brown belt, but I too think there's too much there. I don't have any advice, but I think you are off to a great start!

I like it much better! I agree about ditching the fence all together. Your collages are awesome!

DH liked the fence, so I ended up keeping it, but I did back it off a bit more.

This printed really nice. I'm still not 100% happy w/ the overall design, but I'm going to move on to something else for a while and then will come back to it. Maybe inspiration will hit after a break.

This is where it sits for now:

I really, TRULY appreciate all of the suggestions. You guys ALWAYS inspire! Smile And the difference between that first draft and this one is just AMAZING (if you ask me).

Thanks again everyone!

I like the fence toned down like that. Wink it really does look nice! what does Carlos think of this version?

hey, and how have you been post-surgery? sorry I haven't been better on checking on you via FB.

Carlos doesn't like ANY picture of him, but he likes this version of the collage well enough. I think he'd like it even more if it were pics of Loli and not him. Smile

Thanks for checking on me. I'm doing OK. I can almost brush my hair w/my right hand again. I still can't put my hair up in a pony tail and I *hate* to ask Carlos to do that, but .... *sigh*

I can do most day-to-day things again. And I hope to be able to start driving again in another week or so. I think that has killed me the most. I still can't quite work the camera either. I tried yesterday. I can get my right hand up high enough to adjust the ss and ap, but only for a few seconds, so it didn't go so well. And I hurt like crazy afterward. So I'm going to step back for another week or so. At least I have 80GB worth of pictures to keep me occupied for the time being. Smile

I've also been using the time to go through some photoshop tutorials. Been playing around w/ a fun graffiti one today. I want to use it on a "save the date" card for a dear friend and her fiancee. May have to find some old pics of Carlos and I to work on until I can take pics of my friend.

ANYWAY ... I'm rambling. Thanks again everyone and thanks, Gwen for checking on me.

What if you put the whole body shot behind the belt? I know you tried to ground him to the bottom edge but it still looks floaty. Looks good though! Glad you are recovering, if not at the pace you would like Smile

I know I dont ever post on here... but I was lurking and I had a suggestion...

what about putting the brown belt at a diagonal... or even vertical on one side....

just a thought! Smile
