I have a photo shoot tonight in the sweltering heat with a family I adore from church, plus we are good friends. Thing is, little man (about 3 yrs old) is ornery as all get out. I am worried I won't nail it. He's soooooo ornery! Any tips?!?!

Sounds like Ryken! To get him to smile or look, I'll tell him to give me his 'mad face.' It usually makes him laugh afterwards. I'm going to be stalking this thread, because I need some ideas for Ryken as well :) He's a tough one to photograph!
I would go for a the most 'lifestyle' like shoot as possible. Chances are if he is ornery then mom and dad playing with him will make him smile the most. Go for action shots of them playing and maybe try not to force it. Once a kid is done with photos it's best to back off in my experience. Let them run and play and they'll perhaps flash you a smile mid play. Keep that shutter speed HIGH!! and good luck!!
3 yrs old is just about right for the "don't look at the camera" and "now, whatever you do, don't smile" trick.
Bribe... hehehe...
I use a glitter ball. I know it sounds too easy but it works. U know those super balls with glitter in them. I will bounce it and let it hit me in the face on purpose but act like it just keeps hitting me. I look like a fool but the kids are laughing like crazy! Good luck and if all else fails you could always get mom and dad pushing him on a swing or walking hand in hand from behind???
THanks for all the advice ladies. We ended up just going to the movies with the kids b/c of the heat. This heat doesn't work well. Just too sweaty and red faced.....
