Default Nervously asking for CC -- again

OK, here I go again. I'm kind of discouraged -- I feel like this little photo shoot I had with my daughter yesterday went really well and showed some progress in my journey towards better photography... but then some of the people I've shown these photos to haven't really seemed to say much about them, so maybe they aren't what I'd hoped. So I thought I would ask for C&C and maybe get some more feedback and learn some more.

All were taken in manual, with SS 1/80, f2.7, and ISO 200, in front of a window.

I know the first one is a bit soft, which is sad as it's my favourite:

This one is extremely reminiscent of an old photo of me some 36 years ago, holding a doll with a shy/apprehensive look on my face:

And this one, I think is very sweet the way she's looking at her doll, but I don't know if it really "does" anything for anyone without eye contact.

As an aside, really funny considering how discouraged I am, but a friend of a friend of mine on Facebook sent me a friend request because she had seen my photos on our mutual friend's news feed and liked them. Ha, I have a "fan" -- cracked me up. I thought to myself I should refer her to some of your FB pages!!!

you are being WAY too hard on yourself! this is a REALLY NICE SET and it DOES show how much you are growing as a photographer!

LOOK AT THE LIGHT IN HER EYES!!! Great use of the window to make those beautiful eyes sparkle like this!

    1. considering your shutter speed, this doesn't look too soft to me at all - at least, not at this size. Looks like focus may have fell on her hands instead of her face and at f/2.7, that's going to giv her face a softer look. It's not terrible though - I would print this if it were my child. It's a sweet catch. her expression is adorable, the catchlights are beautiful. I can't comment much on color b/c I'm at work, but at first glance, it looks OK to me.

    2. I love that shy look! Like in #1, I think you used the window very well to evenly light her face and bring a shine to her eyes. Typically, we try to get catchlights at the 2 o'clock or 10 o'clock position of the eyes. here they look more like 12 o'clock. Not a big deal, but you might find it even more pleasing if you had her angled at the window a bit. That brings its challenges too, but you might try playing with it to see what kind of results you get.

    3. I think you caught a sweet moment here. Perhaps if your angle had been a little higher so we were looking down on both her face and the doll's face, it would have a more intimate feel. Or you could get lower so we could have more eye contact with your DD. It's still a very nice snap, but I think with slight tweaks you'd love it even more.

SO ... on the whole, NICE JOB!!! Next time around, you might try bumping up your iso just a bit so that you can use a higher shutter speed. With kids you generally want to stay around 1/125 or higher to avoid motion blur. Even so, you got some really nice shots here and you should be very proud with how fast you are improving!

Take care and keep on posting!

    Best,
    GiGi

I totally agree with all of GiGi's CC....these are really good! and much better than ANYTHING I shot back when I first started learning portraits! lol

The only other technical thing I notice is a bit of yellow light lighting up her ponytail/top of head in #1 & 2. Otherwise you did awesome! Just need to up the SS if you can.

These are really quite nice IMO You should be proud of yourself! I can't comment on color because I'm on my laptop. The only thing That really stands out to me is your low SS, but they look sharp enough, so you pulled it off, but still good to keep an eye on that for next time

I agree that you're being way too hard on yourself! These are really nice!

I'm with GiGi on her CC. She gave you some really good suggestions. I'm trying, as well, to find the best posisition to put the kids in when in the house to get the best lighting. I also noticed what Amy did on the ponytail. Maybe an overhead light? I forget to turn off the overhead light quite often and get a little bit of a yellow cast to their heads.

But I really like these, and you should be proud of them! I just love the eye contact you were able to get! That, in itself is an accomplisment

Thank you! That makes me feel better! I really did think they were better than anything I'd done before and felt like I'd made a step forward, but when DH and some others just went, "Oh, those are nice" in an offhanded way instead of saying, "Those are great!" as I was kind of feeling (compared to my usual stuff), I wasn't sure what to think.

The C&C is soooo helpful! Thanks! I didn't know that there's a rule of thumb, of sorts, for catchlights, so that will be helpful for me to bear in mind. And yup, I had an overhead light I didn't turn off. My daughter asked me to take her pictures and it was quite cloudy and I was worried I wouldn't have enough light, but it wasn't till later that I realized the overhead light made that yellowish spot on her hair. Something to learn from.

As far as the ISO goes, I find it a struggle to do ISO 400 because I seem to get a lot of noise already at even that ISO (though my camera goes up to ISO 1600), so I shy away from it. But I did try the Noiseware software and it works great, so I will just have to start shooting at 400 a little more often and run things through Noiseware, because I know it makes a big difference.

Thanks again for looking and for the great C&C!

I can't believe these are from a P & S! You are really taking your notes, aren't you!

You should be extremely proud of yourself, I love all three and I can't believe how sharp they are with your low SS! Great job.

And, by looking at your profile picture, your daughter looks so much like you! I'd love to see the comparison pic you spoke of!

You are definitely being hard on yourself! Those are such sweet moments. I'm with the others and don't mind that the first one is a little soft. I love your catchlights. You're really doing great with that P&S.
