my mom taught me when I was 15 (we don't have to talk about how long ago that was ;) ) but really all I can do is a basic stitch. I would actually advise looking for youtube tutorials. I have a friend who learned entirely that way.
Good luck!

I don't crochet, but I knit. I taught myself exclusively on youtube videos! I bought a book, but it was really hard to follow along with only pictures....I needed videos :) Good luck!
I agree with Katie, most books aren't much help (other then teaching how to read patterns, which can be difficult in Crochet) I can only do simple stuff like Single Crochet and Double Crochet, but have done a few projects, a ruffled scarf and a newsboy hat are probably my biggest achievements.
I got the basics from my aunt and then used You Tube to reinforce it, look up Knit Witch on YouTube I find her tutorials excellent.
Also Ravelry (https://www.ravelry.com) is a great place to find patterns, there are boxes that let you select your difficulty and cost (I like free).
And a question for Katie, do you knit English or Continental ? I don't really knit trying to learn Continental since its supposed to be easier if you crochet.
Will check those out Amanda. Thanks for the links and suggestions ladies. I know how to do the basic stuff too but I want to do some pattern and eventually make a blanket or something.
My Mom taught me crochet when I was in grade school. Sadly I don't remember how to; but I recently learned to knit (continental), and I enjoy it! I am still new, but am making a scarf and a blanket.
Would love to see pictures of the stuff you all crochet or knitted :)
My mom kept wanting to teach me to crochet, but for some reason that's a hobby of hers I never picked up.--- that and smocking. I started to teach myself to knit long ago. Wish I'd stuck with it. I might just look into it all again.
Here are a couple of things I crocheted.
