Oh my! Crazy camera club

I really and truly and seriously must vent here about the camera club I joined this fall. I thought it would be awesome and teach me a lot about photography. Ahem. Instead I discover that I know about as much about photography as the president of the club, and that NO ONE there has the artistic sense God gave them. Every two weeks, they have a competition (challenge) and judging segment of the evening, and the comments are un-freakin-believable. If there is ANY use of an artistically shallow DoF, people immediately say, "Oh, dear, should've had a greater DoF!" and if there is anything unusual or different about the image, they complain!

Tonight there was a competition for "colours" and I swear, there was one photo that was by far and away THE best photo of the night (no, not mine) by lightyears over the others, and it didn't even place in the top three! I know these things are open to interpretation, but really!

I am so bummed out about this, because we simply don't have the budget for me to take real classes (and the scary thing is, the president of this club teaches community photography classes locally!) and I was so hoping to learn a lot from this club. Instead, it's like these people all have zero artistic insight and I just do not know what I'll learn there!

Oh well... I guess that's one reason I'm here, so I can learn from people whose abilities I respect. So thank you all! Smile

I feel your annoyance.

Last year i joined a club hoping to learn and grow and share but I ended up being asked every week to explain this or teach that. I didnt mind too much but It wasnt giving me the challenge I wanted and now we have moved I dont go there any more.

I hope that you can find a better source of encouragement and learning

Yep, same annoyance here. I went to a taster session of supposedly one of the best clubs in the region, what a freakin joke. It was the biggest clique I have ever witnessed, not one person spoke to me or even looked in my direction, I was the youngest there by about 20 years and it appeared that the same 3 people won the comps time and again. It put me off for life. I would much rather come to somewhere like this, with likeminded people who all have different styles but don't mind sharing what they know.

Stick with us, we'll see you right!

I've found the same here with the 'traditional' photogrpahy groups. The class I took last spring, I felt I knew more than the instructor...and he was a 'pro' and had been in the business for 30+ years. It's hard to swallow some of their stuff sometimes, especially when things have advanced so quickly.

I found that my local Clickin Moms meet-ups have helped me more than ANYTHING I have found through payment. I value their work and opinons. Plus they aren't afraid to share!

I hope you can find a good fit for you Smile

yikes

I don't even know of anything like that in my small town, but all of these stories kinda freak me out about them! A lot of photography I see around here isn't the really creative type. There are def. skilled people, way better than I...but I just feel like the artisitc fun side is not really present. But on the good side of being in a small town....i'm viewed as more 'pro' than I actually am since there aren't many other options outside of a studio setup, lol.

Totally right... very few younger people (though there's a lady that's been a member of this club since '58 and actually is a good photographer, one of the few), and the first time I went this guy I was sitting beside railed on all night about how the same few people always win the competitions and I wasn't sure what to make of it - but he's right. Good or bad. In fact, two of the top three were just BAD photos. I couldn't have been more stunned when they said who the top three were.

I was hoping that since the camera club does shoots together, that would be a great learning tool, but now I'd rather meet up with a couple of local people I met on RedBubble instead. At least I know the calibre of their work and that I can learn from them!

There certainly are skilled people here too, and some of the photos are great. But it's like they don't really understand what makes the photos great from an art standpoint, it's just a lucky happenstance. They talk all about comp and DoF and stuff, but then they can proudly present a horrible photo and a gorgeous one in the same meeting and not even get that they're not at all on the same plane. I think they should all read "Understanding Exposure" and learn about creative use of DoF or shutter speed!!

I guess it all surprises me a little because I am so aware of how much I have to learn and grow, I didn't expect to find that "experienced" photographers would be such a disappointment!

Having said all that, I will stick with it because I committed to it and I feel that God wants me there for some reason; but I will have to accept the group's deficiencies and foibles, and try to learn what I can, but I won't expect so much now!

That just really stinks. I have a lot of aspiring photographers in my area, and I would love to meet up...maybe one day when I have enough guts.

Jennifer, I'll PM you about this later, but does the C Moms group meet in Raleigh? Would love to participate when I'm feeling better!

eta: Tracy, sorry about yours (and everyone elses') experience with the photo clubs! Boo!

But can I just say I'm so glad you all come here so I can learn from YOU! Smile

Aww, that really stinks! I'm glad that you're going to make the best of it though. It's a really great attitude to have.

I've gotta say, that I am so so happy to have found you ladies. I can't tell you how much you all have helped me. Don't know what I would have done without you all Smile
