Default Online resources for a newbie

Hi gals! My name is Hilda and I'm new in these parts. Just upgraded to a dSLR and have no clue about anything.

Are there any recommended websites (or books) where I could learn what I need to know to wean myself off the auto focus option?

My DH is a "tinkerer" who doesn't read manuals and just plays around with things. He keeps telling me to just do that, but I want to actually know what's going on when I change the shutter speed or aperture.

    Many thanks in advance!
    Hilda

Oh, never mind me. I'll just go check out the links in that sticky above.

    yup stickies, the manual

a great book is understanding exposure (I think it's at most local libraries) it really goes through what each thing does and how it affects the photo
