    Default Organizing Images

Being a newbie, I take a lot of throw away shots. I need to just delete, but hate to delete anything. Anyway, the computer automatically organizes in folders by date. But I typically have 4-5 favorites that I've edited and like from a session and 80 other junk photos. I haven't even gotten prints done of anything because my good shots are just all over the place.

What are your tricks for organizing images?

I sort my images by subject, i.e. folders for "Kids", subfolders for "Together", "Nora", "Micah". For other stuff, I have folders for "Landscapes", "Nature", subfolders "Flowers", etc. We put stuff from prior years all together in the same style of folders/subfolders, so there aren't too many in one directory at any one time.

I never used to delete stuff, but now I delete pretty mercilessly. Unless it's a moment I'll never get back (i.e. say a bad shot of a kid's "first", like riding their bike for the first time), or something really unusual, I'll delete it if it's no good.

I always organize by month. I have a year folder and then month folders within that, that also usually have subfolders.

I am still trying to do Project 365 so I like having everything by month - plus I can always find pictures of events based on when I know I took the pictures. If I have a ton of pictures from a specific event/activity/shoot, I put them in a folder within the month folder. For Example 2012\April\Cadence's Birthday Party

I had been saving all images .jpg + RAW ... I recently had to delete a ton though. I need to find a better way to discard pictures from the get go.

Tracy, do you run through everything and sort? Delete as you go?

I download into a folder by date, and then every week or so, I go through them all... delete ones I don't want, and sort into the appropriate folders.

Mine are stored by date of download (which I do every couple weeks unless I have special stuff to do sooner), and then once I've gone through them and do what I want with them, they still stay there but then get grouped into a month folder which then goes into a year-named folder when the year's over.

I regularly go through the camera card and the computer files and delete any photos I don't want.

I have far too many folders, I make one for the year, then month, then week. If there is a special event where I take a lot of pictures I will give it it's own folder.

So my folders would be tiered like this.

    2012 Pictures
    ----- 01 January
    ---------- 01 - 07 Jan
    ---------- 08 - 14 Jan
    ---------- 15 - 21 Jan
    ---------- 22 - 28 Jan
    ---------- 25 Jan Natalie's Birthday
    ---------- 29 - 31 Jan

Mine are organized just as they are imported into Lightroom. By year, month, day. After I import my images I cull them down and flag the ones I want to edit. Edit those and delete the rejected ones. Usually this works pretty well, but I have had a hard time months later finding a certain image because I can't figure out what day it was taken on. I think I'm going to start color tagging images. Green for nature, purple for Rylee, green for Tyler, so on and so forth. That way you can search ALL folders in lightroom and just pull up those tagged. Eh, a project for another day
