Default Pics of my cousin: CC please (EDITS added in post #8)

My cousin was visiting and I asked if I could use her for a bit of portrait practice. Our session ended up being very short due to mosquitoes and other circumstances, but anyway, I got one photo of her I quite liked: Also, I was wondering about CC on this one, mostly in terms of the backlighting, which I have never really tried much before. I know her expression is a bit goofy (though it's very HER, as you can tell by the similar expression in the first one), but I am wondering if there is some feedback on the backlighting and composition. TIA! (Though maybe I should've saved them for our new CC threads!)

This is a great start Tracy! Here are some CC on your picture, your clarity is very good on these. I hope I don't sound harsh on my CC. I try to be honest and give as much detail as I can.

    1. I think you will need to tone down the contrast or saturation, the blacks are clipped since her hair since to blend in with the dark area in the background. The left of her face is looking red/yellow/green, probably color cast from the shirt/grass. The crop for me is too tight. I would leave a bit more room below and above her. Also watch out that horizon - looks like it is leaning to our left.

    2. Again, I would tone down contrast/saturation, the grass is looking neon green, the detail in her hair is gone (clipped black) and you can see chromatic aberration from the trees/background. I do like the fact that you got some light in her eyes and it looks like you caught her mid laugh. Something wonky going on with the color - look at her shirt it is pink/purple hue on it.

#1: i would agree that the saturation or contrast seems a little high to me. If it's not done in camera i would widen the crop as well....great advice from El. Maybe the try bumping down the warmth of the image and decreasing saturation a few steps...if you ave lightroom and can back the orange & greens down too i think it'd help.
#2: i prefer this shot and the bokeh in the trees behind her is nice. I'd like to see this sort of shot in b/w though since while the bokeh is nice, it is almost distracting from the main image which is your cousin. I really like the backlighting behind her hair, i'm a big fan of backlighting with women's hair....i like the sorta halo effect it has.

would you mind some plays with them?

I agree with the CC. I do love the bokeh in #2 so much, and the backlit glow of her hair. But I agree both pics are too saturated and dark. But overall look good!

I think these are very nice, Tracy! I agree with a lot of the CC already given. Maybe lower the contrast a bit to see if it helps. Her skin seems pretty reddish in both of them. I really like the filtered backlight you have in the second one. Those are probably my favorite style of images I'd just work on skin tones and the neon grass in that one.

LOL, it's just my ridiculously bad PP work that makes them look too contrasty and neon. Thankfully they are not at all like that SOOC!! I always admire the photos that really 'pop' on here and get carried away trying to reproduce that. I have SO much to learn about PP!

Anyway... I REALLY appreciate the CC, and can totally see the problems now that they're pointed out. Not sure if I will have a chance to work on them today, because of appointments today; but I will definitely try again and post in the next day or so. And yes, plays are always welcome! I so need to learn how to PP an image well, and seeing what other people do helps!

I have nothing to add, as you've already gotten some GREAT CC already!

I think you're doing an amazing job, though. Yeah, PP is really hard to get the hang of, that right now is my biggest struggle!!! Looks like you've nailed focus and got a good handle on DOF. You go girl

OK, I found the time before my appointments to look at these. So here's some edits... CC on the edits would be SO great, thank you!!

    1. This one is an in-camera crop, BTW, so there's nothing I can do about that; but I see what you mean, El, and will consider that next time out.

Great job fixing the colors/saturation! On the first, I feel like El, that it's leaning down to the left. Could you straighten that without loosing much? If you do loose some, does GIMP have a clone tool? You could probably clone some of it back in. Though, I'm not sure if you'd be chopping her in any way.

I tried to straighten it and I'd have to chop her feet, or clone in a considerable amount of grass. I feel like I don't have a lot of the grass I "need" for cloning in that corner to work with, so I'm not sure I could do it. Or I could just straighten it a little so it's not QUITE so pronounced and maybe only clone in a tiny bit.

ETA: OK, tried again. There's not much space above her head now, though. Not sure how the cloning looks.
