Our week 3 theme has been chosen and it is "Black and White"!
Let see those pictures! There is a quick Black and White Tutorial here.
ETA: To make it fun - Post your color picture then your conversion.
Ok, here is one I did using only the apps on my phone, I used mostly snapseed:
The shot was hot on his face to start with sadly.Untitled by KMS-Photography, on Flickr
A bit OTT but I really wanted to emphasise his eyesDay 13 by KMS-Photography, on Flickr
Here's one from me.....this gorgeous HUGE church was in a tiny town we passed through going to dinner Saturday night. (note: do you think the sky should be brighter? I toned it down to 240.... but it seems too gray, I liked it brighter)
and the original/color:
I would like to see it brighter, Amy. I would think that for a back and white, as long as you have your outlines, and they're not blending in, it would be ok to blow the whites. I could be way wrong though!
I love it Kerry. I never thought a hint of green works on a conversion, but this sure does!
Amy - I like it, I would love to see a little bit more contrast to it. I am assuming this is not sharpened?
I did several of these shots - trying from moody to flat. I will post some more tonight. This is my nephew. He has lighter brown eyes than my boys.
I'll probably be adding in multiples into this week's theme
ETA: I forgot to put in my color version. Here it is, but no noiseware.
Steph, I love that shot!
Did I do better with these?
One more for tonight and off to bed. This one is a bit more moodier...
Black and White
ETA: I don't always get cooperation.... I am getting a lot of these portraits lately...
Here's mine: and colour to compare (untouched): He wouldn't cooperate, so compositionally his eyes are rather centered and I wasn't sure where to crop, but I like it anyway. It's a very "Micah" look.
And just to throw in a couple more, this one because it's so cute, after he won a game of Mouse Trap:
and this one because I really love the light here -- great for conversion, but taken last week so not technically 'valid' for the 52-week challenge:
LOVE b&w, so I love seeing everyone's
Here's two from me today. Ryken was NOT having it today, so I'll try again with him tomorrow.
Can you say overexposed?? IMG_2582 by willis2485, on Flickr

Great shots everyone!
Amy, I would add a little more contrast JMO as I am not very skilled in editing:) Such a beautiful church.
Danielle, can I ask what your conversion was? I really like the conversion and how the wiskers really pop!
Just my spot holder for now cause I took this a little bit ago but I did just convert it today:)
I followed the quick tutorial EL posted. I did adjust the color levels some too.
Well I will have to follow her tutorial then:) I really like how that came out great job following:)
Ladies - you all have out done yourselves. I love all these!!! Feel free to add more pictures for this weeks challenge. With that in mind, someone please choose our next theme listed here.
I have honestly never tried to convert before and I have made his face look a bit muddy here I think. Need to have a chance to play around properly.
Original and conversion
These are all so great. I need to get my camera out. With the sun not shining and no speedlight I haven't been getting my camera out....
shadowgrey I think you did great!!
OK ladies how is this redo?
I *love* the new edit, Amy!
Here is a quick effort from me. Just a snap of Logan practicing yesterday. I had hoped to get outside, but it's been cold and drizzly and he wouldn't dare risk his beloved viola.
and here is the color:
Gigi for some reason I cannot see the b&w image? Love the snap picture with the viola. How long has he been playing? I was thinking of enrolling Brandon to get some violin lesson but I don't know if he has the attention span to sit thru one
Amy - do love the new edit!
Shadow - nice catchlights!
That's odd, El ... both images show for me. Is anyone else having trouble? I will edit the post and check the URL.
Logan started playing the viola this fall when he joined the 5th grade orchestra. I can honestly say I wish I had started him sooner as he loves it so very much. I had worried that we would have to force him to practice, but the opposite is true - we have to make sure he does the rest of his homework first b/c he would rather spend all afternoon/evening playing his viola. Once he learned to read music, he took off - he site reads better than I have ever dreamed of reading. And once he has played a piece, it is forever committed to memory. I wish I had those skills. I'm not saying he's some prodigy, because he is not, but he has fallen in love with the viola. And that sure makes my heart swell. I love the sound it makes and knowing that it brings him so much joy is the part that really gets to my heart.
I am looking at finding him someone to do private lessons over the summer so that he can keep progressing over the break.
Sorry to gush - I guess you can tell this is a favorite subject of mine.
Gigi, I only see the color image too.
That's weird...I see both.
I only see the color image. I use Chrome, and I've had problems viewing some Flickr pics in it before. This is my first time converting darker skintones. There's a good deal of yellow in brown.
I saw both too Gigi.
Even more weird, Suzanne, cause I'm on Chrome as well.
Love all the conversions ladies! You're all doing a great job!
I am on FireFox. Only sees the color.
Did another one, but added intentional grain to the photo. Does it work?
Well, I have been hoping to have more than this but with flu season all crazy, work has been nuts so for now...
I took these of my sisters family on Sunday. I'm getting a little directional light I think. B&W is probably my biggest struggle right now.
And SOOC for #2
Getting ready to head out to Honey Bunny's (Grandma's) house yesterday.
Gigi- I originally saw both, but not today. So weird!
El- I like the grain!
Suzanne- You got great directional lighting, so it works really well as a B&W!
Here's one I took this morning. Forgot to upload the color version.
One from this week. Not sure which I like better? Opinions???
Stephanie- that pout is adorable! Is he feeling better?
He had seemed to be this morning, but started to go downhill again around lunchtime. Gave some Tylenol to him and sent him to bed. Hopefully some rest will perk him back up again. I'm so ready for spring! Thanks for asking.
How are you and the boys? Did I read you guys had fevers yesterday?
Awesome job everyone!!! Love the participation!
Now someone PLEASE pick our next theme I will be posting earlier as I will be gone during the weekend and most likely will have limited internet access
How about circles/curves?
Thanks Katie! Will create a post for that.
omg Stephanie! so cute! Hope he feels better soon.
Sickies here too. I haven't posted yet b/c I hadn't gotten my camera out, but I did today- just a day late! Here is my shot for the B&W. I have to use an action and tweak it until I am happy. I just struggle using PSE....any tips!? I don't have curves (at least I don't think) to use El's tutorial...
Here is Randall teaching Ruthie to crochet!crochet_web by sadieruth, on Flickr
I love so many of these!! Katie Willis - the picture of your two kiddos is just precious ... so many of them are!
I tried all week to get a decent picture to convert and don't think I really succeeded...terrible weather and lots of flat lighting here, but here's what I got!
and the color version - this was a prime candidate for conversion because of the color cast of the green wall/green tshirt/green snotty nose ... + the lamp light = yuck!
And I also put these together that I saw when I was uploading to Flickr - probably one of my favorite b&w images (from a while back) even though I see her face is a little hot in the conversion!
