How do you make a shot like this work?
My settings, though I have no clue why they are what they are. Not sure if I was even thinking when I took it...

Thats tricky. The only thing I notice is that your ss is pretty high.I'm sure you wanted to keep the shot from being blown but all I could think of is to lower your ss so then you could go lower on your iso. Then meter for him and adjust. When I shoot something surrounded by light I tend to use my spot meter which you probably did. This is what I do when I do shots of Jazz jumping outside in the sky.
I guess I always have a problem with these types of shots with not blowing my subject as well as the window. I'm noticing his head is misshaped because part of it's blown. So if I lowered my SS, I would imagine even more of him would get blown, and the outline of him would start getting lost.
I guess what I'm looking for is something like this. last week | Flickr - Photo Sharing! I don't feel like I got that here.
I'll bet she used strobes (or a bounced flash) there.
Oh, you're probably right! Guess ill have to give it another go sometime and see what I can come up with.

I have a similar photo to that. Whenever I do photos by a window, I expose for outside (if I want it to be exposed...). Here's one I took a few days ago. Sully is pretty dark, but I like how it turned out.
