Default Saturday's shoot -- CC please (Edits added)

Okkkkay. Here we go. I edited a bunch and these are the best of what I've got. I feel like I really didn't get a lot to give them, which is pretty frustrating. Like I said in the "Bad shoot" thread, it just all did not go terribly well, in spite of the fact that they were a GREAT family to work with. I think I had my ISO at 320 most of the time.

    1. My favourite of the family shots, and one of the only few I'm happy with the light for the most part.
    f/3.2, SS 1/500

    2. I seriously LOVE this. Somehow it melts my heart every time I look at it. One of the only ones I love.
    f/2.5, SS 1/640

Not sure if B&W is better. I SUCK at conversions.

    3. My favourite of the girl alone.
    f/2.5, SS 1/500

    4. This one is too tight.
    f/2.2, SS 1/500

    5. I do like this one quite a bit.
    f/2.5, SS 1/640

    6. f/2.5, SS 1/320

    7. A family moment.
    f/2.8, SS 1/160

    8. Really struggled with colour on these two.
    f/2.5, SS 1/160

    9. I'm tossing this one in because I don't know what to do about it. It was an epic FAIL... I placed her in entirely the wrong spot, in the shade but somehow her face was so bright, I must not have been far enough into the shade. But the airplane is a big deal to the family (the dad works in the airplane industry, and co-owns a small plane with his father), so I know they want one of her alone in the plane, but this is the best I've got.
    f/2.5, SS 1/2500

    10. One more family shot. f/2.5, SS 1/250

You are being waaaay to hard on yourself! I'm just on my phone right now, so I will be back tomorrow to give critique, but I wanted to encourage you this evening. You have some really sweet moments, and I know they are going to love these.

Tracy, these are really good. I'm on my iPad, so take this with a grain of salt, but some of them look a little red and #6 looks a little cool. I love 2&6, but like them all. I'd like to have a play with editing the airplane one if it's ok. ?

    Thanks for the encouragement, guys!

Danielle, sure, feel free to have a play!

On the "reds" issue, I was having a heckuva time with colour, between the mom and dad's black clothes, the white dog, and the red outfit on the kid! I should've used my gray card, duh. But they were late and time was getting away from me and I was worried it would slow me down too much. I tried using a "skin tones" chart and doing the skin tones using that, and sometimes the colour LOOKS off to me, but the chart says it's right, and I don't know what to believe, as my eye for these things kinda sucks. (Though it IS getting better, which is a comfort. )

I have to agree with the others, Tracy, you are being WAY too hard on yourself! If I were the family, I would be SO HAPPY with this set! Here's my CC - take w/ a grain of salt as I am at work (as usual) you know how bad the monitors are here ...

    1. this is a great shot! they all look in really good focus even w/ an ap of f/3.2! a beautiful family in a beautiful fall setting!

    2. I love #2 as well. There is something truly amazing about a loving father and you've captured it well here. Personally, I like the b&w the best. It has a timeless feel to it and I think your conversion looks pretty darn good.

    3. I see a touch of red on her, especially in her hand. But otherwise, this is a FABULOUS photo and I know mom and dad are going to eat it up! Such a great expression, love the light in her eyes. So sweet!

    4. this might be a little tight, but only just so - I think it's still a very strong image. I might even like it in a portrait crop. It's nice to have the negative space in the direction she's pointing, but I'm not convinced that all of that is needed. Beautiful bokeh here - makes her really stand out from the environment. And OMG, those boots are just scrumptious.

    5. LOVE! My eyes are drawn just a bit to the bright (blown?) spot in the top right corner, but just a touch. Otherwise, I truly love this one too.

    6. I still love this one, bu think it is one of the weaker shots in this set (that tells you what a great set this is, btw). The family is in shade, but the light in the distance is a little distracting - dad's neck looks brighter than the rest as well. I simply love the composition though. It's very well balanced shot and using the trees to frame the family is perfect.

    7. what's not to love about this one? it's a very sweet moment with such natural, genuine smiles and laughter. you might tone down the hot spot on dad's neck, but otherwise it looks pretty good to me.

8a & b both look pretty yellow, though b is less so than a. I can see that they were both (along with the background) bathed in beautiful golden light though and there is something to be said for that. If you have too much trouble getting the color balanced, these might be good candidates for conversion.

    9. I'm not sure what to tell you about this one. You might try adding a good deal of fill light in post processing to see if that helps even out the light. If that doesn't help, you might try converting this one and maybe even playing with textures.

    10. another really lovely family shot. Too bad the dog is looking the other way. And though they are slight, the branches through their heads are a little distracting. That's nitpicking quite a bit as since the branches are so thin, they are not a bit problem. I notice them mostly around Mom's head. You could trying cloning those out if it bothers you. It's a really strong shot otherwise.

Seriously, Tracy ... I love these and wish I had come away with this many really nice images from the shoot I did on Sunday. You are going to make that family seriously happy!

Yes I agree- you are being WAYYYYY too hard on yourself!

    1. Great color, great focus! My only CC on this one was to have mom closer to dad. I realize that it's tough especially when you throw in a dog!
    2. I too adore this one. The color one is my favorite b/c of the rich fall colors! This will be one pic that will be treasured!
    3. I too see the red hand. Was it pretty chilly? That's what mine do if it's chilly. I do wish she was looking at you, but I know how tough that age is! You did really good. Great light! Great bokeh!
    4. She is a doll. I just really wish she was looking more in your direction.
    5. I feel like the BG is too bright here. I don't know how easily it'll be to turn it down some, but maybe try that.
    6. I do think this is a good one. I like shots like this. I am thinking it might have been a bit stronger if they were holding the baby and the baby was looking back at you or something like that. I don't really get the walking with the plane deal.
    7. SWEET moment! I think there's slight motion blur on her foot, but it's still a shot that is great! Love the emotion!
8&9 Struggling with these more b/c IDK what she's wearing and her hair is killing me! For a portrait shot, I wish she would have tried a bit harder ya know!? I know that's not your fault though!
    10. I know how you feel when that one shot is not what you had planned! I too would do what GiGi suggested, try to play with it in different ways.

Tracy- you did great. Don't be so hard on yourself. (((HUGS)))

Thank you, ladies!! Very helpful and encouraging comments. I will do some re-edits and be back!

Oh, about the airplane in #6... that shot was the mom's idea, and I didn't really get it either. I liked the idea of them walking away, but would've liked the baby facing me OR not in the plane. But I guess because she can't walk yet, they thought this would work. Not sure!

And LOL Sadie about the hair. I know. I even cloned out some spots where her scalp was showing because she hadn't pulled it back very evenly!! The dad also had white dog hair on him after controlling the dog in an early shot, so I cloned out a LOT of dog hair too!

I'm (finally) back to offer some CC! I haven't read through all the other CC, so please forgive me if I repeat something.

1 - Lovely shot!! Do you have any with the dog looking and could perform a swap? Should be a pretty easy one to do. Getting nitpicky, but I would have angled the plane a little bit more like (but not as much as) number 9, so you could see more of it. You have PSE now, don't you? You could really make those fall colors pop in the background by playing with a levels layer in the individual colors, and masking family back in.

2 - In the color version it looks like you did something near dad's shirt on the bottom right of the frame, but it looks fine in the b&w. I think this is a very nice moment you captured here. I think I like the conversion better here, but those fall colors could really be brought out in the color version, and might make me like it better

3 - This is adorable! Focus looks good at this size. It would be stronger with the back of the chair in the frame and with some eye contact, but I love that smile she has on her face

4 - Looks green to me. This one doesn't really capture me all that much. Mom and dad may like it though, since they know the context of what she's looking at.

5 - Love this one! I'd burn the background or use a levels layer to make it darker and mask her back in. I'd also see about brightening her up a tiny bit as well.

6 - At first glance I really liked this one, but studying it further, I wish there was a little movement in it. I know it's because she can't pedal the airplane, but it would have been nice for mom and dad to be walking along side of her and dog walking with his tail wagging. But again, I understand why they weren't walking.

7 - Great family moment captured!! Wish mom's hair wasn't thrown back in a messy ponytail...

8 - These look a little orange to me, but cute moments!

9 - Tough one! I'm betting what happened is that the sun moved, therefore moving the shade back a little bit putting her in the bright light. I might see if I can play with this one later if I have some time and see what I can come up with.

10 - Nice family shot!! Maybe clone out some of the branches from the tree that are around mom and baby's head. Again, do you have one with the dog looking? A swap might be nice with this one as well. And maybe try to bring out those fall colors in the background with a levels layer or 2.

Again, you did a great job with these, Tracy! I do believe you were a bit too hard on yourself, and got some wonderful images.

Danielle, those are pretty good plays, thanks. I'm going to work more on this one. Last night I tried HDR, as sometimes I've had success with that in portrait situations (a last resort, mind you), but I didn't get good results. I will play more.

Thanks for the feedback, Steph, that helps a lot too. On #1, I actually like the muted tones in this one, which is weird because I'm usually a COLOUR, MORE COLOUR kind of girl (which is why I don't usually do B&W). But I edited most of them to make the fall colours pop, so I'll try it on this one too and see.

As for the dog, that dog never looked at me once! I have a gazillion shots, and no dog looking at me. As it was, I had to head-swap the dad's head with another photo because the only time the baby looked at me was when the dad was looking at HER. Fun times. She was a tough one, she didn't want to look at me much at all either.
