Shooting in RAW?

So, I know it is recommended to shoot in RAW. I've never done it before and really don't know what it even means to do it. What are the benefits of shooting in RAW? Does it take up more space to store on the computer?

yes, it takes up more space. but if you're good about cleaning up your folders after editing a session, that helps. (I personally suck at this and have way too many RAW files stored). but it's great for editing - you can change exposure, white balance, and overall tweaks while barely diminishing the quality of the photo (when you make similar changes in jpg you start losing data). but once you get used to editing RAW in your workflow, you find that it saves time instead of taking it away, and you end up with better images.
