Carson usually gives me a few minutes of photographing him when I ask him. I got these two the other day that I want to share. They are so "him".

CC is always welcome. Both shot with my 50mm 1.4 and 1/500 f/2.5 ISO 400. The editing looks slightly different in the two of them. Something I need to pay more attention to next time...

Okay....I'm going to try to show you how bright your photos are. What I've done is selected a section of your son's skin using the eyedropper at 11 pixels at the spot I have circled. I used that sample and drew a line on the image with the paintbrush. To the right of that line I drew a line of pure white. Then I selected the lightest area of my son's skin from the picture below (circled area at 11 pixels) and drew a line to the left of your son's skin sample.

I hope that this can help you see how bright your image is. The base color of your son's whole face is far too close to pure white. Bright is fine...I consider this edit of my son as very bright, but I doubt that if you held up a piece of white paper to your son's skin you'd think....yep...pretty much the same color.

That totally helps! I did see how bright that this one was, and went and decreased the brightness. Guess it wasn't enough though. Is the other one still too bright?

I just went back, and I'm still having that same problem. Would you mind telling me what I did wrong in the first place? The histogram in Lightroom was right in the middle. Here's the SOOC. Just brought into LR4 on the default settings, and exported.

I uploaded the full size jpeg for anyone who wants to have a go at it.

Your SOOC is slightly over exposed...which is fine since nothing is blown....but you should really use Lightroom to bring down the exposure significantly. I darkened both the midtones and the shadows. The SOOC is also too cyan and magenta so I added some red and yellow using a color balance layer. I made sure to turn off the "preserve luminosity" box because adding yellow and red can make the image brighter. I also boosted the saturation a bit with a hue/sat layer. If the grass is too green for you you can mask it back at any point along the way. His skin is now perfect both according to my eyes and the numbers when I do a color balance check.

Oh, I did go in and fix his eye circles (as it looks like you had done) and also brightened his eyes a bit.

So that's a nice clean edit. If you're looking for something more vintage or processed looking, you don't need to make super bright skin to get that white washed effect.

Other than the brightness, which Amber talked about, they're cute shots! Love the hat. #2 is very sweet with the tilt of the head and the sweet smile.

I agree they're both too bright. I really like #2! His face seems so sweet in it I like Amber's 1st edit the best.

Super duper cute! Look at that face! He is adorable! I agree, a bit bright, but I think you can fix that easily!

Carson is just SO CUTE! You are so lucky that he will sit for you, even if only a short while. Soak it up while it lasts!

I love Amber's edit - shows you just how it can look rich and vibrant without being over saturated. These are both great shots!

I always thought it was just his natural paleness that made some of your photos of him seem bright. He is pretty pale naturally, right? I do like Amber's edits though. Becuase I do see the cyan/blue and lightness in your sooc.
