My hubby got me a speedlite for my birthday! I am still VERY new at taking pics, but do understand somewhat the basics. Can someone give me a simple rundown on situations when you'd use it and how, if possible? How often do you use yours?
FTR, I have a Canon Rebel XSi and the speedlite is a Canon 270EX. I've got 2 lenses: a 50mm and a 18-55mm.
I don't know anything about OCF, but hope to get one soon... so I will be learning too!

I have the 580ex ii. I almost always bounce it off the wall or ceiling when i'm shooting in my home or client's home. Bouncing it doesn't give you those pinlights in the eyes or harsh effect that your onboard flash does. Now i've also started using it off camera with a shoot through umbrella but i'm no where near close to saying i've mastered that i'm more comfortable bouncing it personally. I haven't used it as fill outdoors or anything yet.
I don't know of any 'speed light FAQs' or tutorials, per se.
I'm no expert, but I have an SB-600 and, like others, I mainly bounce it off of my ceiling or a window or wall.
The Strobist has some lighting tutorials, but I think that is mainly for off camera lighting. I prefer OCL to using the speed light whenever possible, so I went through the tutorials while back. They're very well done (imho):
I have the 430exII and I'm happy with it so far. I got in in March right before Jackson was born, and am just now really starting to experiment with it. I use it for all my snaps, because I don't like the way the on board flash looks in pictures. I bounce it off the celing or a wall. The pics in my siggy were taken in front of my sliding glass doors and the flash bounced off the window behind me.
