Taking the leap out of lurkdom

I hope you guys don't mind a newbie..? Smile

My name is Mary and I recognize some of you from other boards where I post regularly. I pop into this board as a lurker from time to time, but in the interest of improving, I've decided to finally post. I've read Understanding Exposure and I understand the basics (the VERY basics, haha)... But I'm quickly finding that in order to get better, I'm going to have to do the scary thing and get some genuine CC. I'm not looking to be a pro or anything like that, but I just want to be able to take better pictures of my family and for my friends/extended family.

I have a Canon T1i. I've forced myself never to use it in automatic mode. This isn't to say my pictures are good (lol), but I'm at least forcing myself to learn about the manual controls. Most of my pictures lately have been taken at home with a 50mm f/1.4 lens because it's dark in here and the weather is crap. Now that spring is coming, I'm hoping to get outside for something new/different.

I know absolutely NOTHING about post-processing, so anything I share will pretty much be SOOC, with the exception of simple cropping. I'm hoping to learn more about it, but I just haven't had the time to devote to learning editing software. My screen isn't calibrated, so as far as colors go...?? :dontknow: :My arch nemesis is white balance. Mine seems to be wrong SO often, so if I could learn more about that, I'd be a happy camper.

I was going to share a few for CC, but I realized I have no clue where to find my info (ISO, SS, etc)... So I guess I need to figure that out first and then I'll be back. For now, hello!

Welcome! Sounds like you're already doing all the right things -- not shooting in automatic, learning about exposure, etc. -- and have decent equipment to boot, so you should do great! Can't wait to see some of your shots. Love your siggy pic -- did you take that? Beautiful baby you've got there. Smile

Hey Mary welcome, now we get to share another board together. I'm also a newbie at this, just recently got my first dslr a Canon T3i, and also want to just learn to take good pictures of my family. Don't be scared to share no one bites, from what I have seen you take really good pictures. If you right click on the picture you want to share, then click properties, then details, scroll down you will see your f/sec/iso/mm. I look forward to seeing your first cc.

Hi Mary. I recognise you from when I had my DD (different BB but I would lurk on June as it was the month ahead of me). That info is in your EXIF data. You can view it in properties like Stephanie said. I can also see it in my photo program (listed as View EXIF data in one of the menus)

Thanks! I did take this one. I might share some of these for CC later because they're my most recent pictures.

Hello! How exciting, and congrats on getting your new camera. I'll be looking forward to learning with you.

Thanks for showing me where to find all the info on my pics. I see it now!

I do have a question...
When you guys share pictures, what site do you upload to first? The reason I ask is because I have just been linking pictures from facebook because I generally use it to share with my family/friends and it's just quick to copy from there. I have found though that the pics are REALLY compressed or something when I post them on there, to the point that they lose obvious detail.

I'll just post a pic for example... In this actual picture, there is a lot more detail in the spit bubbles in his mouth, lol. This just stood out to me because I thought the little spit bubbles were kinda cute, but you don't even really see them in this pic...It looks like a blur, but the copy on my hard drive is more detailed. So anyway, I'm just wondering if any of the other sites you use keep the integrity of the pics better?

(If anyone wants to CC: 50mm, ISO 200, f/5.6, 1/200)

Hey, Mary! :wavehello: Nice to see you over here!!

As for compression, I think FB is pretty notorious for compressing REALLY badly! I think I saw somewhere about how you can fix that, but it was way too many steps for me to care that much. Wink For this board, I usually load onto Flickr! Otherwise, I use Photobucket for everything else!

Can't wait to see more of those boys! Smile

Hi! Glad you're joining us! White balance is also my arch nemesis, so we already have something in common. And, I'm beyond jealous of your nifty 50 - wish I had one!

Welcome! I have a T1i also. I use Flickr to store pics to post at these forums. Yes Facebook can do horrible things to pictures sometimes. Not always though.

Welcome!! Start sharing, that's the best way to learn. I've learned SO much just from starting out here. It's definately a great place to get the basics and then you learn where to go when you crave more!!
