Then and Now-- Progress

Knowing that Alaina and Aiden are going to be two in less than two months, I've been feeling rather reminiscent the last week. Therefore I've been looking through some old photos. I can really tell that I've made a lot of improvement since last year when I really started trying to work on taking better pictures. I thought it might be fun to share some pictures from our "earlier" photography days along with an example of where we are now. And perhaps it will help encourage some of the lurkers and newbies to the board, too. Smile

Great progress. Keep at it. Here is a comparison of where I was when I started out with my Rebel XT.

This is where I am now...

My first, sorry attempt at portraits. Dec 2007 with my point and shoot:

August 08 still with the point and shoot, but learning how to use it better:

First picture with my DSLR! End of Sept 08:

In April '11, I started in with my love for backlighting. But I sucked...

Oh, I could go on and on, but I think that's enough to show exactly how far I've come. Smile

You have grown and I have really been noticing it lately! Well done!

El & Steph- you both amaze me! Such amazing progress from the first to the last!

Here's some from me!
1st ever photo shoot (Free of course!) I was so scared and I shot in manual while thinking, "maybe I should do this in auto to make sure I do better." LOL!

I'll play.

I was terrible...horrible...awful...before I started coming here.

When Nathan was first born...flashy with my P&S

After seeing some cute baby photos on my birth board I tried a black background.

After finding this board, still with the P&S, but in manual:

After getting my Xti....every now and then I could get one like this. That kept me going.

My first skill building session for strangers. Can you say spotted light. I think I booked the session for mid day....so clueless!

2nd skill building session....I just COULDN'T figure out the light outdoors.

My most recent kid session:

One more comparison. Here is one from my first headshot session in 2009. I thought these were great. Now that I look at it, it's completely unsuable. The angle is terrible and unflattering, there are focus problems, a bad chop, a very busy background and a thing going right through her head. Also...this is the heavily retouched image...I don't have the RAW version, but I'm sure it was seriously underexposed.

Here is one from my most recent headshot session. Look at that lovely SOOC. Wink

Know what I love about you, Sadie? Your style has always been there from the beginning. You've progressed so much, but still have that Sadie flair Smile

Wow! Awesome progress, Amber! That SOOC is amazing!

Really great to see everyone's "then and now" photos. It inspires me to keep trying!

I am so busy right now, I haven't had time to do my "then and now", but I am loving seeing everyone else's.

I guess I'll post too.

OK I have an insane # of pics here because I've been at this forum learning for so long LOL.

When I first got interested in doing Eva's Christmas photos I was still using auto mostly but wanted to learn more manual. But I didn't really pursue photography learning/skills at all until 2009. My first attempts at Eva's pics were awful but still hold a place in my heart LOL

First-ever time trying out Christmas pics, in 2007:

Again, still using flash and not knowing much of anything (2009):

After that session is when I really got the bug....and received a DSLR for Christmas 2009 Smile so after that I started studying via this forum and elsewhere online...but still not doing much people photography at all except for Eva of course....

Trying out my SLR on Eva for the first "real" time, in 2010....I still remember posting these here for cc lol!:

My first real conversion that I was proud of and got good CC on....in 2010...

Totally fell in love with natural light after being out with Eva on this day in 2010....

I was constantly trying out spots for getting the best natural light.....Eva got so sick of me taking pictures LOL

First got my 50mm 1.8, spring 2010, woohoo! LOVED the results I got this day using my big window...

always love using that big window in my living room....

Skipping ahead to Christmas 2010, still one of my favorite sets ever...
