Update ... I'm doing the maternity shoot! - "field trip" post 10
So the mom of the newborn-to-be is totally psyched about a maternity shoot. We're still working on a schedule. She wants to know what to wear ... and I'm not sure what to suggest. What I'm hoping to do is a sunset shoot and include her daughter (just turned 2) and husband in a few. We have nice weather right now, it's actually on the cooler side (cold for August if you ask me!) but I don't know if it will warm back up before I get a chance to shoot her. It most likely won't be for another week.
If I'm doing sunset time of day, will a white shirt be a bad idea? I don't want to blow anything, and we'll be starting in advance of sunset so it will be on the brighter side outside. I don't think black is a good option for this though.
Any other advice for an outside maternity shoot? I'd like to hang my backdrop on something, but I don't know what ... and it's not machine washable so I don't know if it's a good idea to bring it out.
And I'm also shooting a family of four kids on the 12th (really good friends of mine). I'm just excited for the extra practice and the ability to provide them with hopefully nice photographs.

personally ... I like earth toned colors when shooting outside - emerald greens, browns, blacks. I've seen some people get some really cool effects with bright colors (yellows, aquas), but I suck at that myself.
no advice for hanging a background. I try to use whatever is around and use a really open ap so that whatever is there is blurry.
I know you'll do great, Gwen and I hope you have a lot of fun w/ this!
I really can't wait, and the mom seems excited too. I checked out another place today, it's a park with a mansion. I'll need permission to shoot her there I think. I mean, I'm not charging her at all, this is total learning (and I'm really nowhere near going into business, I keep repeating that to remind myself )
Here's my blog entry for today with pictures from my field trip
I'm investigating good areas for photographing families and checked out Morven Park in Leesburg today. It was high noon, so lots of sun (not the best for taking people pictures, actually). I took a handful of pictures, mostly in the shade. Jordan is my most cooperative little model, so that's who you get to see today.
Can you imagine the sun setting behind these trees? I can and think it would look cool ...
And here's the mansion at Morven Park. The kids wanted to go in, but it was closed for renovations.
