waaaay OT ... gulf oil spill

I don't post ANYWHERE else, so forgive me guys for posting this here. I need advice and just don't have any place else to request it ....

with tales of the Gulf Oil Spill constantly on the news, DS is asking a lot of questions. Good questions. He's concerned and really wants to help out. We want to encourage his compassion whenever possible. But I'm at a loss for what to do here. I really would like for him to do something more than raise money. That just feels so ... disconnected.

Work is nuts for me right now, so a trip to Lousiana to help clean beaches is not in our future. When it inevitably reaches Texas beaches, we WILL find the time for just that. But as of this morning, the currents were still moving the bulk of the oil east, not west.

ANYWAY .... what would you advise? Do you know of any groups gathering supplies for volunteers?

I've tried some basic google searches looking for stuff but mostly all I find is sites collecting money. We'll give. Loli actually has set aside $$ from his piggy bank. But he wants to DO something. And I want to help him.

Can any of you point us in the right direction?

TIA,
GiGi

Hi, good for him for being concerned and wanting to help. How about this---

http://www.matteroftrust.org/programs/hairmatsinfo.html

Or if he's interested and since it's hard to help directly with that situation, he could volunteer time at a wildlife rehabilitation center.

I'm continuing to look more into it myself. It's heartbreaking how many hundreds of thousands of birds and others have already died or been injured from this and from every other spill in history. Today's technology should be capable of preventing this from ever happening Sad

Oh also the makers of Dawn dishsoap might have information about donating supplies, since their soap is used for de-oiling birds etc.

Your son has such a great big heart. Not sure how else to help besides raising money. Is there a local group or non-profit organization in your area that are collecting supplies? Green Peace, etc.?

This oil spill sucks big time. I've seen a bunch of birds covered in oil and I can't imagine the eco system in the sea, how this is messing it up.

Thanks guys. For now, we're donating money to a few organizations (sierra club, etc). But we got to talking about it and have decided to go a bit more out of the box for some other efforts. This whole mess is all aobut oil. So we're going to look at how we can reduce our need for oil-based products in our home and then make a permanent committment to follow through with whatever we decide is one way we can reduce our dependence on oil and petroleum-based products.

Best,

WOW, what an amazing son you have raised! You should be so proud of him. I don't really have any suggestions, but I like the idea of seeing how you can lesson your need for oil and that's something that he can help with on a daily basis.

We *are* proud of him, Tara. He watches the news with us and really takes these things to heart.

We've found out about a group of students from the TAMU ecology department that is planning a trip to LA soon, so we are going to help get them some of the supplies they need to clean birds, etc. Loli is very excited to be able to PHYSICALLY DO SOMETHING to help make the things he sees on TV just a little bit better. Even if we can't go with them, at least we can help them do their job.

I adore my kid! He teaches me each and every day how to be a better person.

This just makes me feel all warm inside! With all of the bad things you always see and hear about, you sometimes forget what amazing people are out there!

Hi GiGi!

That's so awesome that Loli wants to help out! If these students are going to do a drive to collect supplies, what if you and Loli put together a collage with some pictures. Allow him to do some google searching and then help you fit together a nice big collage to put at a collection place? Obviously it would require permission. But it might allow you both to use your talents to help. Making people aware of a problem is a big part of the solution. Wink

You've got a great kid! Smile

that's a really cool idea, Beth. In this case, it was just a group of students from the ecology department who, like Loli, just felt a need to DO SOMETHING. It's not organized by the university or anything. So web bought some gas cards, sun screen, dawn soap, rubber gloves, and trash bags to give the students a start on what they'll need for their trip. Wish we could go w/ them and take pictures of the effort.

We're still researching what we can do to lessen our need on oil. I'm hoping we have something specific that we start doing before the end of the month. It's actually turning into a very informative research project for us both.

Best,
GiGi
