Default To watermark or not to watermark...

I'm sending copies of the few photos I took over to J's daycare in hopes that they will like them and want me to do more. I'm so down right now though and have a strong feeling they won't say anything. A thank you maybe though. Why is it so hard for me to get practice out here? How are you all able to get practice on other people? I've asked a few people I know around here and I keep getting No thank you's or no replies at all. My own kids will have to do for now. Anyway....am sending some photos through email just for now. I keep thinking I should watermark them in the corner at least. But then again I don't know. I think to myself that maybe it's silly to watermark it because I'm not a professional yet and don't want to come off as one but it is my work and I'd like to get credit and/or recognized for it. kwim? I don't know what to do right now. I feel like I'm already failing at this whole photography thing and I haven't even really started yet.

I don't ever intend to go pro, way too much work if you ask me ...... however, that being said its still your photo, taken by you, you deserve the credit regardless of if you get paid for them or not.... I watermark mine!

I agree. I'm by no means a pro, but I still watermark mine. If anything... it will get your name out there! If they post them on facebook or myspace or email them, then, assuming they don't try to remove your watermark, your name will be put out there and it could even bring in a few referrals.

I agree, just to acknowledge it's your photo you should watermark it! I don't plan on going into business today or tomorrow but I always make sure it's know they are mine with a watermark! Good luck, I hope you get somewhere with sending these photos. I know how frustrating it can be to not have anyone to practice on!

Watermark ... because if they want copies for print, they'll ask you, and that's the best compliment.

But it's frustrating when nothing is said. I took pictures of my friend's son, and sent them to her and she said not a word. I had to ask her if she even got them, and she said "I got them and just glanced at them". Seriously? Anyhow, just telling you that some people just don't react to photos at all. Luckily, I think they're rare. Most people love seeing pictures of their kids.

I know the question was about watermarking, but I wanted to share how I go about getting practice since my own kids are not interested. Whenever I come up with a new idea, location or idea I call a friend and in an voice full of excitement I say "I just came up with a great new idea for some photographs, but my kids are tired of my camera in their face. Can I borrow child X for a little while this weekend to play? Maybe we will get some fun photos for you too!" If they say they are busy, then I ask when would be a better time.

DEFINITELY watermark! Right over the image at low opacity. You took all the time, effort and talent to take the picture, edit it and send it to them. Don't sell yourself short Loida!

    Yup definitely watermark.

For what its worth. I solicit people and ask them directly, so they can commit and can't say no... lmao. But seriously, can't you do like a stranger photo session? Post an add on local newspaper or craigslist?

you know El, I could. I am just so darn scared! I'm scared silly and I don't know why. I am guessing it's because I am just not ready yet to practice on strangers which is why I'd love to practice on friends first but I kind of lack in that department oh but if I was in my hometown I'd have lots of friends who'd be more than willing for me to practice on them. It kind of sucks. DH isn't really too supportive. He's more silent about it anyway. He doesn't say anything about me buying books, etc. It's a start I guess. Maybe by spring I'll be brave enough to put fliers out in people's mailboxes around here. That's probably the only way I'll be able to get started. Now, if only my house was big enough for an indoor studio. Someday...

    how's this for watermarking?

it's not right in the middle but it does say who took it which, for now, is good enough for me.

p.s. my DH thinks it's silly of me to watermark them. he also thinks the whole copyright thing is silly and that i shouldn't do it. we had a discussion earlier today and he just gave me a funny look and basically said that for now if i do practice on people i should just go ahead and give them all their pictures on cd, full resolution, and that's that. i don't know what to think!
